深圳宝安国际机场的由来

深圳经济特区成立后，随着国际交往和对外贸易的发展，迫切需要开辟航空客、货运输业务，兴办民航空运事业。

After the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the city witnessed fast development of foreign trade and a substantial increase in international exchanges. Shenzhen was in urgent need to develop its own civil aviation industry, to open up business for air passenger and cargo transport.

深圳市委市政府自1981年开始邀请专家进行机场选址的踏勘。专家们先后对黄田、后海湾、西乡、羊台山、南头、福田等十多个选址进行充分调研论证。经综合考虑地形、城市规划等因素，最终在1988年8月4日，国家计委正式下达《关于深圳黄田机场设计任务书的批复》，将机场场址确定在黄田。机场初步被命名为“深圳黄田机场”。

Starting in 1981, the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC and the city government commissioned experts to find suitable sites for an airport location. The experts visited more than 10 sites including Huangtian, Houhai Bay, Xixiang, the Yangtai Mountain area, Nantou, and Futian for research and suitability. On Aug. 4, 1988, after a thorough consideration of the topography, Shenzhen’s urban planning and other factors, the Central Government approved the airport location in Huangtian, Bao’an District, and officially named it the Shenzhen Huangtian Airport.

1988年12月，深圳机场在黄田村举行了隆重的奠基仪式。深圳机场的建设方针是：“一次规划，分期建设，由小到大，逐步发展”。第一期工程：按中型机场规模、跑道2800米及配套附属设施，能提供波音737、三叉等机种使用，主要飞国内航线。第二期工程：将根据发展的需要，把跑道加长到3600米，按大型客、货机使用的要求设计。第三期工程：待空运量发展到一条跑道不足使用时，将新建第二条跑道以及必要设施。

A grand ceremony was held in December 1988 to mark the laying of the Shenzhen airport foundation in Huangtian Village. The authority had made a comprehensive plan for the development of the Shenzhen airport, which would be carried out in phases, to gradually develop it into a large airport. The airport initially was a medium-sized airport with a 2,800-meter-long runway and other supportive facilities in its first phase, which was suitable for accommodating medium-sized aircraft such as the Boeing 737 for domestic flights. The runway was extended to 3,600 meters long in its second phase when it was designed to cater to large-sized passenger and cargo airplanes according to its actual development need. Its second runway and related facilities were constructed in the third phase when airfreight had grown beyond the capacity of the existing runway.

经过不到三年的建设，1991年10月12日，深圳黄田机场举行通航典礼。从这天起，深圳人终于有了自己的机场。1992年，深圳黄田机场旅客吞吐量超过166万人次，跻身国内大型空港之列，航线、航班及客流递增幅度均居全国之首。

It took less than three years to construct the first phase of the airport, which was put into operation Oct. 12, 1991. The passenger throughput of the Shenzhen Huangtian airport exceeded 1.66 million passenger trips in 1992, becoming one of the busiest domestic airports and topping the country in terms of routes, flights and passenger traffic growth.

1998年，经民航总局批准，机场更名为“深圳黄田国际机场”。但随着时间推移，这一命名的缺点逐渐显现。其一，机场命名与实际地名不相符，机场最初选址在宝安区西乡镇黄田村和福永镇下十围村交界处，其中黄田村占地约80%，下围村占地约20%，但实际建成后，机场红线范围大部分在下十围村。其二，“黄田”二字在粤语及闽南语中与“黄泉”极为相似，易使人产生误解，影响机场声誉，当地群众对此也有意见。因此，深圳向中国民用航空总局申请更名。2001年9月18日，经中国民用航空总局批复，深圳黄田国际机场正式改名为大家如今所熟知的“深圳宝安国际机场”。

In 1998, the airport was renamed Shenzhen Huangtian International Airport, as approved by the national civil aviation authority. However, there were increasing voices against the airport name for two main reasons. Firstly, the name didn’t accurately correspond to the actual location of the airport. According to the original plan, about 80% of the airport area would be located in Huangtian Village while the remaining 20% in neighboring Xiawei Village. But after construction the majority of the airport was located in Xiawei Village. Second, the pronunciation of Huangtian in Cantonese sounds similar to the word meaning underworld, which many people claimed was inauspicious for an airport. Therefore, the Shenzhen authority applied for a name change to the national aviation authority. On Sept. 18, 2001, Shenzhen was given a go-ahead to change the airport name to Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport.
