Great Wall Motors’ Tank brand has revealed another rugged, adventurously-styled off-roader.

The Tank 400 is a concept sized similarly to the production Tank 500, but styled in the same aggressive manner as the Tank 700 concept revealed at the 2021 Shanghai motor show.

The company has yet to confirm technical specifications for the Tank 400, though it says it’s a “medium-to-large” SUV like the Tank 500 albeit with less of a luxury focus.

The Tank 500 measures 5070mm long, 1934mm wide and 1905mm tall on a 2850mm wheelbase, which makes it similar in size to the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series.

Autohome reports the Tank 400 concept rides the same wheelbase as the 500.

Unlike a LandCruiser, the concept features angular styling with dramatic touches like flared wheel arches, an exposed spare wheel and BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres.

It reportedly has off-road ability to match its looks, with locking front and rear differentials and body-on-frame construction.

Inside, there’s a wide touchscreen and, unusually for an upscale Chinese car in 2021, an analogue instrument cluster with distinctive gauges located in three barrels.

It’s unclear whether a production Tank 400 would be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine like the Tank 300, or if it’ll use Great Wall Motors’ new turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine.

Available with a 48V mild-hybrid system in the Tank 500 and slated to receive a plug-in hybrid option, the petrol V6 puts out 260kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

It’s mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission developed in-house.

In contrast, the Tank 300’s turbo four-cylinder produces 167kW of power and 387Nm of torque.

It’s mated to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission, with the Tank 300 boasting a 0-100km/h time of 9.5 seconds.

The Tank name first appeared on the Wey Tank 300, before it was rolled out into its own brand.

The Tank 500 is the next model slated for launch, while the company has also previewed a flagship 800 plus the aforementioned 700.
