The Board is an administrative body headed by two commissioners. The commissioners are appointed by the Democrat and Republican parties, approved by the county legislature, and serve a two-year term.

Responsibilities

The Steuben County Board of Elections is charged with faithfully executing and upholding the New York State Election Law. The Board ensures that the electoral process is conducted fairly and efficiently. We are responsible for:

Voter registration, outreach and processingMaintaining and updating voter recordsProcessing and verification of candidate petitions/documentsCampaign finance disclosures of candidates and campaign committeesRecruiting, training and assigning the various Election Day officers to conduct electionsOperating poll site locationsEnsuring each voter their right to vote at the polls or by absentee ballotCanvassing and certification of the voteVoter education, notification and dissemination of election informationParty Enrollment ChangeFebruary 14, 2024 is the cutoff date to receive a party enrollment change, in order for it to take effect before the primary election.February 15, 2024 through July 3, 2024 all party enrollment changes received during this time will be held.July 3, 2024 - All party enrollment changes received from February 15, 2024 through today will be entered and take effect right away.

Party enrollment changes received by the Board of Elections office after July 3, 2024 will take effect immediately.

In NYS you can only vote in a primary election if you are a registered voter in the party holding a primary in your voting district.

If you submit a party enrollment change through the NYS DMV website or submit a voter registration form by mail, there is no guarantee it will reach us before the deadline if it is done after February 8, 2024.

How to Change Your Party Enrollment

If you are a registered voter you will need to complete a voter registration form and select the party that you wish to enroll in or select No Party if you do not wish to be enrolled in any party. Mail the completed voter registration form to your local Board of Elections. Voter registration forms are available on our webpage under Forms.
