ThispaperseekstosynthesisethevariouscontributionstothespecialissueofLongRangenningoncompetencecreatingsubsidiaries

(CCS),andidentifiesavenuesforfutureresearch.Effectivecompetencecreationthroughworkofsubsidiariesrequiresanappropriate

balancweeninternalandexternalembeddedness.Therearemultipletypesoffirmspecificadvantages(FSAs)essentialtoachieve

this.Inaddition,widebandwidthpathwaysareneededwithcollaborators,rs,customersaswellasinternallywithintheMNE.

Paradoxically,thereisanaturaltendencyforbandwidthtoshrinkasdispersionincreases.Asdistances(technological,organisational,and

physical)becomegreater,theremaybedecreasingreturnstoRDspread.Greaterresourcesforknowledgeintegrationandcoordination

areneededasintraMNEandinterfirmRDcooperationbecomesmoreintensiveandextensive.MNEsneedtoinvestinmechanismsto

promotewidebandwidtowledgeflows,withoutwhichwidelydispersedanworkedMNEscansufferfrominternalmarket

failures.
