The Leviathan is a large sea creature found within the Scar, who is encountered during Desert Treasure II - The Fallen Empire. Once dwelling in the Eastern Sea, the Leviathan was inadvertently dragged into the Scar during the Battle for the Eye when Perseriya accidentally opened an abyssal rift in an attempt to teleport reinforcements in.

It has since then adapted to the abyssal environment and has made itself at home in a large lake within the Scar, preying upon those who were unfortunate enough to be pulled into the Scar during the battle. This is seen clearly on accounts of survivors and what remains of the Zarosian fleet in the area.

The Leviathan is best fought with ranged; attempting to attack The Leviathan with melee will result in the following message: Your melee attacks can't reach the lure! The boss fight is initiated upon climbing into the arena, where it will use a volley of rapid-firing attacks which deal damage upon impact; protection prayers will fully block these attacks.

A player fighting the Leviathan.

The Leviathan will attack with random volleys of mage, range and, melee orbs at varying attack speeds throughout the fight. At the end of each volley, the boss will roar and cause debris to fall onto the player, potentially restricting movement and obstructing line of sight. Every subsequent volley of attacks will increase in intensity, which can become difficult to switch prayers for unskilled players at later volleys. The boss can also bite players in the tiles right next to the pool, which deals melee damage.

At any point during the sequence, players can cast shadow spells to stun the Leviathan (which will always succeed), where it will stay still for a small amount of time. Damage against it is capped at 10 when stunned, but the player can run around to attack its backside to deal a large amount of damage, which will cause it to retaliate with a special attack. This also resets the Leviathan's attack speed to the beginning of the 2-tick attacks.

Upon reaching 180 hitpoints, the Leviathan will begin the enrage phase. Its attack speed will now stay at two ticks, losing the ability to launch orange orbs (but still being able to bite players) while an abyssal pathfinder will spawn to the north-west of the arena (or the next clockwise direction if the spawn point is blocked by debris) and will begin to move clockwise. The player must stay within the pathfinder's Area-of-Effect for a significant accuracy and damage boost until the boss is defeated.

Drops[edit | edit source]

When the Leviathan is defeated, a drop will be rolled for until the roll results in a success, as described below:[1]

Roll 1/96 for the tradeable unique drop table (3/96 for awakened variant). If unsuccessful, roll 1/53 for the awakener's orb. If unsuccessful, roll 1/25 for scarred tablet. If unsuccessful, roll 1/200 for smoke quartz. If unsuccessful, roll 1/5 for the supply drop table. If all rolls above were unsuccessful, the standard drop table is rolled. Once the players rolls the entire drop table, roll 1/2,500 for Lil'viathan.

In addition, defeating the boss perfectly will earn 50% more loot from the standard drop table,[2] which requires the player to do the following:

Avoid any damage from an auto or special attack, barring the unavoidable damage from its roar at the end of an attack sequence Avoid taking any chip damage during the enrage phase Getting hit whilst correctly praying but standing outside of the Leviathan's lure in the last phase of the fight does count as avoidable damage.

If the player is no longer in the same instance when the boss dies, either due to teleporting out or by dying at the same time, no loot roll is made, and no progress can therefore be made on the vestige drop.[3]

Drop rates estimated based on 387,013 samples from the Drop Rate Project, unless otherwise cited.

Uniques[edit | edit source] Unique Item Jingle The sound that plays when receiving a unique drop.

There is a 1/96 chance of rolling the unique drop table per kill. After hitting the table, there is a 1/8 chance to get a piece of the Virtus robes (then a separate 1/3 roll to determine which piece), a 3/8 chance to get a single vestige roll (it will drop on the third such roll), a 3/8 chance for a chromium ingot, and 1/8 chance for the Leviathan's lure. Below lists the effective drop rates.

The first two rolls will cause a standard, non-unique drop to appear and increment a hidden variable; when the third such roll occurs, the vestige is dropped and the variable is reset. Secondary uniques[edit | edit source]

The items are rolled in the following sequence: awakener's orb, scarred tablet, smoke quartz. These items will replace the normal loot rolls.

Changes[edit | edit source] Date Changes 9 August 2023(update) Players will no longer receive the Your melee attacks can't reach the lure! message when trying to autocast in melee range. The colour of the melee projectiles has been adjusted to be clearer for players with visual impairments. Casting shadow spells should now grant the default cast experience. An issue causing perfect kills to fail has been resolved. 3 August 2023(update) The combat level for the Leviathan's quest variant was increased from 574 to 593. The drop rate for the tradeable unique drop table was increased from 1/120 to 1/96. Trivia[edit | edit source] The Leviathan is a mythical creature referenced extensively in the Bible. Its design appears to be based on a rocktail, a cave-dwelling fish from RuneScape, both the raw and cooked version. The Leviathan is the only one of the Forgotten Four which is aggressive towards players upon spawning: Duke Sucellus is in a sleeping state and is not aggressive until awakened with poison. Vardorvis does not attack players when entering his arena nor when he respawns, since his barrier mechanic does not trigger until he is attacked. The Whisperer, while as an Odd Figure, does focus on the player, but she cannot attack in that state and is a separate NPC.
