Pork feet are in high demand in many countries in Asia and Europe. In Russia we use it to make stock or New Years dishes. It looks like pig trotters were popular here in US a while ago but something went wrong. I don't know many Americans who enjoy eating this delicacy nowadays.

How to cook slow cooker pig feet

We are using slow cooker in this recipe which will make feet super tender and delicious. First of all you will need pork feet. I prefer to buy already sliced lengthwise in half or if you got them whole you may want to cut it yourself.

Slicing feet in not necessary but it will help them cook faster and it will be easier to eat. Place pig feet on the bottom of your crockpot. I used about 3 lb of pig feet in a 8 quart slow cooker. You can use 6 qt slow cooker too with the same about of meat.

Chop white onion, peel and slice garlic. Add to the pot. Get paprika (you can use smoked paprika too), some bullion powder, salt and garlic powder. Add to the pot on top of pork. If you would like pig feet to be a little sweet, add 2 table spoon brown sugar. This is optional.

raw sliced pork with garlic and spices

I like pig trotters to be with a spice kick so i added about ½ cup of pickled jalapenos. You can add raw jalapenos, habaneros or chili peppers. It depends on how spicy you like it.

Pickled jalapenos are milder than raw and i added that so my kids can enjoy it too. Top all the ingredients with water. I used 2 cups and it didn't cover feet completely, about half way. You do not need to cover ingredients with water entirely. Pork will release lots of juices while cooking.

Once all the ingredients are in place, just close the lid and cook on HIGH for 5 hours or on LOW for 10 hours. If cooking on HIGH i would check at a 4 hour mark. If pig feet you are using are smaller, they will cook faster. Same with the LOW setting, check at around 8 hour mark.

Health benefits

Oh Pig trotters are just loaded with collagen! Its known to help your skin look younger and enhance skin elasticity longer. Its also a great alternative to store bought collagen in pills (which is also usually comes from cows and pigs).

What does pig feet taste like

As for me it tastes very similar to beef tendon but with the pork flavor. The texture definitely remind of tendons. Since there is a very low amount in fat, pig trotters don't taste greasy or fatty, but will be chewy if nor cooked right. Usually it is melt in your mouth tender and full of pork flavor (ever though there is not much meat on it). The skin is delicious too, just make sure to scrub off all the leftover hair before cooking.

pig feet cooked in slow cooker Where to buy

Most of Chinese stores and markets will have it on their refrigerator shelf. You can also try to buy it online, it will come rock frozen. In Russian culture we also have recipes using pork feet so if you have Russian store nearby, give them a call and ask if they have any.

Recipe tips and tricks Scrub pork feet before cooking to remove any dirt and leftover hairSkip the spicy peppers step if you don't like spicy food. You can also cook this dish from frozen pig feet. Add an additional hour of cooking either on HIGH or on LOW. Side dishes

This slow cooker pig feet are absolutely delicious with white rice. Scoop some juices too and pour them on top of rice, yum! Serve them over creamy mashed potatoes or with boiled potatoes with dill.

I don't mind eating pig feet just as is, without any side dish. Add lots of chopped green onions on top and enjoy.

You can definitely thicken the gravy with slurry. Slurry is a mixture of cold water and cornstarch in equal proportions. Just mix about 3 tablespoon of each in a small cup and pour into the slow cooker pot. Stir and its ready. Pour it on rice or mashed potatoes, or noodles.
