Three lead objects from a private collection – two lead bullae of Byzantine secular officials and a token – aim to shed further light to our poor knowledge of the early middle ages of Chios island and her role in the imperial provincial administration: the first is a bulla of a certain George, archon of Chios, the second belongs to a certain Nonnos. The former is of particular importance for it adds one more piece to the puzzle regarding the unknown – not to mention enigmatic – position of Chios in the Byzantine thematic circumscriptions. Summarizing the main points of the historical record and the scholarly literature, in the early seventh century Chios is shown to be under the jurisdiction of the komes of Abydos, a city at the entrance of the Hellespont; both places belong to the same circumscription, whose ninth-century appellation is “theme of Aegean Sea”. The district of this maritime theme covered the northern Aegean, and, according to the testimony of the Emperor Constantine Porphyrogennitus, encompassed “the Cyclades and from among the Sporades the isles of Mitylene, Chios and Lemnos, the entire Troad from the cape Lekton to the Propontis, Cyzicus and Parion, the Hellespont, the River Rhyndakos, Daskyleion and the Kianos Gulf”. We know for sure that in the early eleventh century the island became a separate theme ruled by its own political and military governor, whose title was general (strategos) of Chios. The presence of an “archon (magistrate) of Chios” appears solely in the sigillographic record. Based on the earliest testimony of the Byzantine Taktika, scholars place this office by and large between the late ninth and the tenth centuries. An important detail of the two bullae is their provenance: they were found in the southern district of the island. This paper seeks to discuss this new evidence integrating it within its wider context of the Propontis and its environs. Konstantinos’un ifadesine göre “Kiklad Adalari ve Sporad (Şeytan) Adalari arasındaki Midilli, Sakız ve Limni Adası, Baba Burnu’ndan, Marmara Denizi’ne kadar bütün Biga Yarımadası, Kizikos ve Parion (Kemer Köyü), Çanakkale Boğazı, Mustafakemalpaşa Çayı, Daskyleion Antik Kenti ve Kyanos Körfezi” idi. 11. Yüzyılın başlarında ada, unvanı Sakız Adası olan, kendi siyasi ve askeri valisinin yönettiği ayrı bir alan haline geldi. “Sakız Adası Yargıcı (sulh hakimi)” varlığının sifilografik kayıtlarda kronolojik olarak sadece dokuzuncu ve onuncu yüzyıllar arasında görünmesi nedeniyle, Sakız Adası’nın kesin idari durumu hala çözülememiş bilimsel bir bilmecedir. Adada bulunan iki mühürdeki detay, onların adadaki varlığının kanıtıdır. Bu makale, Propontis ve çevresini daha geniş bir bağlamda birleştiren bu yeni kanıtı tartışmaktadır.
