Ancient Chinese lived anartistic and refined life, which included tea drinking, flower arrangementand, most importantly, the scholar’s four jewels— a writing brush, ink, an inkstone and paper.

古代中国人的生活非常具有艺术感，同时又非常的雅致，他们的生活中包括茶、插花，最重要的是，文房四宝，笔、墨、纸、砚。

During the Song Dynasty, the four most regular activities for scholarswere burning incense, tea ceremonies, ink-wash paintingsand flower arrangement.

在宋朝，学者们最常做的四件事是焚香、茶道、水墨画和插花。

It was a marked difference from the Tang Dynasty when people’s entertainment centered on equestriansports and expensive vesselsmade of gold and silver. Instead, the Song Dynasty turned to people’s inner emotionsand a simple art style.

Flower arrangement is popular with white-collar ladies today but in the Song Dynasty it was an activity for scholars, who believed it showed the arranger’sphilosophy and morality.
