Ba Jin, originally named Li Yaotang, was one of the most influential Chinese writers of the 20th century. He was born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province in 1904 and died in Shanghai in 2005. He was a prominent member of the “May Fourth Movement”, a cultural and political movement which emerged in China in the early 20th century. His works, which include novels, essays, and short stories, explore the themes of social justice, freedom, and human rights.
