外媒评：淄博烧烤出圈记

你吃过用小饼卷葱再加肉的烧烤吗？你吃过老板加工到一半还需要自己烤制的肉串儿吗？你吃过论斤卖的烧烤吗？

以上构成了淄博烧烤的特色，却又只是揭开了它的一角。

要说烧烤的独特，哪座城市没有它独特的味道？若非如此，《人生一串》这部纪录片无法达成三部曲的成就，东北、新疆、云南、广东、重庆……各地有各地的绝活，令人魂牵梦萦。

淄博烧烤在第三季才登上舞台，相比第一部时的人气，这时的《人生一串 3》号召力不比从前，所以，淄博烧烤出了点名，但又好像仍旧默默无名。即便如此，这座城市仍旧积极地摸索着，准备着，期待着。

于是她等到了一个机会，另一个机会不久也接踵而至。先是「大学生组团到淄博撸串」登上热搜，后是一位名为 superB太的博主在多城调查缺斤少两问题时发现，他暗访的十个淄博摊位没有一家用鬼秤，而且有几家还多给了食物。

对「诚信经营」丧失信心的人们仿佛看到了久违的「本分」，纷纷踏上前往淄博的列车。而苦等这一时刻的淄博文旅局早就做好了准备，新增烧烤专列、公交，文旅局长亲自服务，赠送当地礼品，学生享受住宿半价优惠等，甚至呼吁当地人先把烧烤的机会让给外地游客。而当地人也十分配合，热情满满地招待全国各地的游客。

最令人惦念的不是食物的味道，而是人心。

这座没落的城市如同抓住了「逆天改命」的稻草，想方设法让家乡变好，让当地的百姓从中获益。如网友所说，「淄博火的不是烧烤，是整个城市万众一心的态度」。是啊，有谁不想亲眼瞧一瞧这样浓厚的人情味是否依旧在大地上盛开呢？

我从三篇文章中选了四段，分成了三个版块。大家猜猜看，哪段来自国外媒体，哪段来自 China Daily？

01 场景描述

As the sun began to set, the aroma of sizzling meat filled the air, drawing in even more hungry customers. The sound of laughter and chatter echoed through the streets as families and friends gathered around tables at barbecue restaurants, eagerly awaiting their meals. The small city in East China's Shandong Province was thronged with people flocking to its numerous barbecue restaurants for a taste of the mouth-watering dishes.

aroma

指的是 a strong pleasant smell「香气，香味」。smell 可以是臭味，也可以是香味，但 aroma 仅可能是香味。比如， the aroma of black tea 「红茶的香气」。

「在空气中弥漫」有哪些花样表达？

01 fill the air

原文用的是 fill 这个动词，今天给大家补充两个其他的动词。

02 permeate the air

六级 & 考研词汇

permeate 常用来表示 to spread to every part of an object or a place，指液体、气体等「渗透；弥漫」。

The smell of roast beef permeated the air.

空气中弥漫着烤牛肉的香味。

此外，它还可以表示思想、影响、感情等 to spread throughout a place「传播，扩散」。我们来看 2014 年英语二考研新题型材料中的一句话，作者用 permeate 来描述浪漫主义避世精神出现在那时的大多数作品中。

While it probably wasn't apparent at the time, much of this work is permeated by a spirit of romantic escapism that: the likes or Wordsworth would have readily understood.

在当时看来或许并不明显，但大多数这些作品都弥漫着浪漫主义避世精神 一一华兹华斯这类人一眼就能理解这种精神 。

03 be saturated with s th /ˈsætʃəreɪtɪd/

此外，我们还可以用 saturated 这个形容词构成的短语来代替熟悉的 be filled with sth ，或 be full of sth 。化学中表示溶液「饱和的」就是这个单词，热爱化学的同学可能比较熟悉。除此之外，它还可以表示 completely filled with things or people，即「充满……的，弥漫着……的」。所以「空气中弥漫着某物」我们还可以写成 The air is saturated with sth 。

The room was saturated with the aroma of coffee.

那房间弥漫着咖啡的芳香。

be thronged with people

我们在之前的精读中讲过 throngs of… ，专指 a large group of people in one place「一大群人」。此外 throng 还可以用作动词，表示 to go somewhere or be present somewhere in large numbers「蜂拥」，或「挤满」某地。所以如果某地人山人海，我们可以用 The place is thronged with people 代替 The place is full of people。

The streets were thronged with shoppers.

街道上挤满了购物者。

mouth-watering

当我们想描述食物色香俱佳，是不是第一时间想到了 delicious，tasty ？不过这两个单词用来形容那些好吃到舔手指的食物多少有些寡淡了 。在汉语中，我们形容食物特别好吃，常会用「垂涎欲滴」这个成语。而英语也有一个与之完全契合的单词——mouth-watering。watering 派生自动词 water 「流口水」，你的眼前是不是已经浮现出嘴巴在流口水的画面了？好，现在我们就用它来形容香甜诱人的草莓蛋糕，英文为 a mouth-watering strawberry cake 。

此外，它还可以用来形容某物「诱人的，吸引人的」，相当于 attractive，appealing，tempting 。最后这个单词我们在上周的《》刚讲过。在描述低调的光刻机制造巨头 ASML 时，《经济学人》这样描述：

Its shares trade at a mouthwatering 32 times forward earnings, double or more those of its biggest customers.

该公司的预期市盈率高达 32 倍，是它那些最大客户的两倍甚至更多，令人垂涎。

02 出圈原因一：大学生

Zibo has long sought to publicize its unique take on roasted skewers of meat, veggies, seafood and assorted other foodstuffs, hoping that it would become a must-try "brand" of the city. Until late February this year, the publicity of Zibo barbecue had achieved limited success. That is, until some college students attending a job fair in the city went to try the barbecue and took videos of themselves enjoying the food and posted them onto social media.

The passionate youths unknowingly started a trend that has spurred the hashtag: "College students visit Zibo to try barbecue in groups" to go viral on social media.

roasted skewer

roasted 派生自动词 roast，表示「烘，烤」。skewer 是金属或木头做的「串，扦子」。所以，roasted skewer 的意思就是「烤串」。不过为了突出烤串独具中国热色，《人生一串》的英文名没用这个表达，而是用了音译的 chuaner。顺便说一嘴，咱们的文化要加强对外宣传啊，找遍了这部纪录片的所有海报都找不到带英文名的。想从片头截一个，结果英文名采用的字体在屏幕上显示不清楚，而且特别小。

veggie

美式英语常用 veggie 代替 vegetable「蔬菜」，另外，veggie 也指「素食主义者」。

foodstuff

意思是 a substance that is used as food「食品」，注意咯，这个单词是可数名词，所以我们看到原文用的是复数 foodstuffs。

assorted

想要表示「各种各样的」，除了 various，还可以用 assorted 这个形容词。所以「五花八门的藏书」我们可用 an assorted collection of books 来表示。

publicity

对应的动词是 publicize，表示 to make sth known to the public「宣传，报道」，或 to advertise sth「推广」某物。很多电视剧电影的剧情经不起推敲，于是宣发时特别喜欢拿明星的绯闻作噱头。这种「宣传噱头」用英文来表达就是 a publicity stunt。good publicity 是「正面报道」，相反，bad / adverse publicity 则是「反面报道」。

There has been a great deal of publicity surrounding his disappearance.

他的失踪已为传媒广泛报道。

attend a job fair

job fair 是「招聘会」，加上 attend 就组成了短语「参加招聘会」。

unknowingly

形容词是 unknowing，表示 not aware of what you are doing or what is happening「未察觉的；无意的」，相当于 unaware。值得注意的事，通常情况下，这个形容词仅用于名词前，而非其后。而且，在翻译时我们常常无法直译，需要根据语境来灵活调整自己的译文。

Some institutions have been victims and perhaps unknowing accomplices in the bank's activities.

一些机构成为了银行活动的受害者，而且可能在不知不觉中做了其帮凶。

03 出圈原因二：社交媒体

Douyin, the Chinese TikTok app, is also at the heart of Zibo’s recent success. As reported by 36kr, Zibo first became a hot topic on Douyin in early March, when the videos of the initial groups of students taking the high-speed train to Zibo to eat barbecue went viral. In April, Zibo again hit the hot trending lists on Douyin after one vlogger tried out ten different food stalls in the city and found that they all gave him the right portions or even gave him some extra food for free, reinforcing the idea that Zibo is a hospitable city.

at the heart of sth

想说「核心」，我们可以用 heart 来替换 the most important part，或者 core。提醒大家一点，heart 表示「核心，重点」时，只用单数形式。比如，「一切问题的核心」应写作 the heart of all problems。

The distinction between right and wrong lies at the heart of all questions of morality.

是非界限是所有道德问题的核心。

近义词辨析：kernel

kernel 也可以用来表示「核心，要点」，但它通常不与 problem，matter 等搭配，主要用来指思想、理论、计划等的核心。

The kernel of that message was that peace must not be a source of advantage or disadvantage for anyone.

那一信息的核心是和平绝不应该成为对任何人有利或不利的根源。

initial

四级词汇

这个形容词的意思是 happening at the beginning「开始的，最初的」。比如， the initial action 「最初反应」。不晓得《最初的梦想》有没有英文名，如果没有，我们可以大笔写出 The Initial Dream 。回到原文， the initial groups of students 是指「首批前往淄博的学生们」。

The aim of this initial meeting is to clarify the issues.

本次初步会议的目标是澄清这些问题。

这个形容词使用频率非常高，2021 年六级的段落匹配便有它出没。其中 fire alert 指的是「火灾警报」。

Paris prosecutor Remy Heitz said that an initial fire alert was sounded at 6:20 pm on Monday evening but no fire was found.

巴黎检察官雷米 · 海茨表示，周一下午第一次火灾警报于 6 点 20 分响起，但当时没有发现火情。

hospitable

四级词汇

看上去跟 hospital 有关，中文释义却毫无关系，但其实这两个单词有着千丝万缕的联系，共享同一个词根 host 。host 有「主人；接待」之义，而「医院」最开始并非为病人修建，而是更像一个慈善机构，收容老弱病残及穷苦人士，所以 hospital 的最初语义是「接待老弱等的地方」。后来 hospital 转型，成了专为病人服务的「医院」。

清楚了这个单词的来历，我们再去记忆 hospitable 就轻松多了。正因为跟「接待」有关，所以这个形容词常用来表示 friendly, welcoming, and generous to visitors「 好客的；热情友好的」 。后面常加 to 或者 towards，构成短语 be hospitable to/towards sb 「对某人十分热情」。

The local people are very hospitable to strangers.

当地人对外来客人十分友好热情。

对应的名词为 hospitality 「好客，热情款待」。

Every visitor to Georgia is overwhelmed by the kindness, charm and hospitality of the people.
