interview with the foudner of tinycottons, barb bruno and gerard lascano Tinycottons is one of the brands we have fallen for from the beginning, both for their commitment and their designs. Barb and Gerard, the founders of the children's clothing brand Tinycottons welcome us in their concept store in Barcelona. The couple tells us the adventure of their beautiful brand and opens up about a more personal story of their family and three children. Managing their company and understanding Gregorio’s world, their 8-year-old son with autism, has been a daily challenge for them.

What did you do before Tinycottons?

I arrived in Spain 8 years ago. I worked at Adidas and quit my job in 2013 to completely dedicate myself to our project. My husband Gerard has been by my side throughout this incredible adventure, which has consolidated rapidly.

Could you please tell us the story of tinycottons and your roles?

Tinycottons is a family business and everything started at our home. In our minds, the brand and its image were already well defined, but carrying out our ideas was much more complicated! After several seasons we slowly arrived to the identity and the quality we had already dreamed of for our brand to have. Each season we develop a story and a theme for our collection and we cultivate with pleasure our graphic universe thanks to artistic techniques. We are very proud to be recognized for this style!

Do you still wish to start something else?

Yes, absolutely. When I was younger, I used to play games in which I pretended to own several companies. Then, when I was a teenager, I used to sell cookies, art, and clothing made by me. I truly admire my parents and my grandparents who showed me how to achieve my dreams through hard work, and my husband who has been by my side everyday throughout this adventure.

Do you have any advice for people who are starting an entrepreneurial adventure these days?

Not to be afraid. You need to get out of your comfort zone and take some risks if you have a clear idea in your head. It is very important to be prepared to give up plenty of things, like your free time and as hard as it is to say it, to have a successful company you also need to sacrifice your family time. I hope my children will have an entrepreneurial feeling and that they will enjoy it as much as I do.

What motivates you?

Spring! It is the best time of the year as everything has a special colour and a special scent. Creativity is everywhere! More specifically, I am inspired by travelling and getting to know new cultures, people and stories. Meeting other entrepreneurs, listening to their stories and sharing experiences. Needless to say, my family, my husband and my children also motivate me.

How do you balance professional and personal life having a son with autism?

Every day we try hard to improve our son’s daily life. Furthermore, we look for social organizations for autism, so that Tinycottons can actively participate in such a social cause.

Do you still have a dream you would like to achieve?

Travel with my children and be able to enjoy each country, their residents and their realities with them. This is a dream we will achieve little by little.

What is your source of inspiration?

Barcelona, my daily life, long conversations, good books, movies, museums and travelling.

How do you differentiate your brand compared to others?

I believe that our quality is a very important value at Tinycottons. Our brand is pure and graphic, and sort of basic with a modern, street and relaxed touch. Parents nowadays look for these.

What is your philosophy?

The most important thing for us is the quality. However, not only the quality of the primary materials as we also want to take into account the quality of work and fair trade. We truly know each factory that works for Tinycottons, their employees and the overall process, in order to insure that our work is proper. We want to be the brand chosen for its quality by grandparents, for its design by parents and for its comfort by children.

Is there a brand you admire?

I admire plenty of brands, but I mostly admire the people behind the scenes as I know what it means to have your own company and try to make it bigger every day. I admire brands with social projects such as Toms and Warby Parker which is a philosophy we are trying to develop at Tinycottons. With regard to the design, I really like a modern and minimalistic style, but also Hermes for its campaigns and CELINE for its image.

What do you do on your free time?

I try to travel as much as I can!

I only use Pinterest and Instagram.

The Pulitzer Hotel is perfect and it is situated at a great location. If you have children, you must visit Kidandaco.

What do you like about Smallable?

Do you HAVE any other projects?

We wish tinycottons would continue to grow. Three years after we launched the brand, Tinycottons is in more than 30 countries, has 2 boutiques in Barcelona, and we have opened our flagship store in April. However, we will not stop here as we have more opening projects in mind. One of our next goals? New York!
