Rotten.com was a shock site active from 1996 to 2012. It was a website with the motto “Archive of Disturbing Illustrations” and was devoted to pathological curiosities, photographs of violence, deformities, photographs of autopsies or forensic examinations, images of perverted sex actions, disturbing or misanthropic historical curiosities. The site was founded and run by a developer known as Soylent Communications. Site updates slowed down in 2009, with the last update in February 2012.

Rotten.com had a Spartan look and there were no thumbnails next to the links, and the links had one-line descriptions, framed with unhealthy humor, often without a hint of their content. The content consisted of images submitted by users, and developers rarely publish content themselves. Although the material was labeled “real,” it was often misattributed; in one case, a file billed as “Motorcycle.jpg” contained a description of a motorcycle accident, but the developers admitted that it was probably a suicide attempt using a shotgun.
