Abstract: Ionic polymer metal composites(IPMC)is a kind of new artificial muscle material. Owing to the low water content, the common Nafion membrane IPMC has a poor actuating performance. Nano-oxide of iron was used to prepare the porous Nafion membranes utilizing the particulate leaching method in this paper. Moisture content test indicates that the water content of porous Nafion membrane is 2.5 to 4.3 times that of the common Nafion membrane. And with the increase of nanoparticles content, the water content of Nafion membrane also increases. The output displacement, the strain energy density (on the ground of energy transformation) and the non-water working time of porous Nafion membrane IPMC are 1.6~2.5 times, 2.8~4.8 times and 1.7~2.1 times respectively as much as that of the common Nafion membrane IPMC. In a word, the presence of porous structure can enhance the actuation performance of IPMC.
