In and of the community

Dentons takes seriously our commitment to the communities in which we live and work—and our pro bono work reflects our entrepreneurial approach to solving problems in a complex world.

Dentons' Los Angeles office is active in the community and participates in the American Bar Association Pro Bono Challenge. Our team is involved in a wide range of professional, community service and civic organizations, from the local Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles Economic Development Counsel to international organizations that share a strong commitment to the surrounding city. We are also at the forefront of efforts to address environmental concerns.

Community involvement and progressive advocacy is a priority for the Los Angeles office. Some of our actions include:

Drafting a persuasive amicus brief for the League of California Cities: Represented the League of California Cities as amicus curiae. The appellant, Pasadena Republican Club, alleged that the Western Justice Center, a lessee of city property, selectively denied it an opportunity to rent meeting rooms and that this constituted impermissible political discrimination. The case involved the limits of municipal liability and the potentially dangerous policy consequences of finding a city liable for renting out property when there was no evidence of the lessee’s “custom, policy or practice” of civil rights deprivations, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed summary judgment in favor of the City of Pasadena. Winning an appeal for a domestic abuse victim: Our litigation team, working alongside Legal Aid Chicago, secured an important win on appeal for a petitioner seeking relief under the Illinois Domestic Violence Act. Our client sought an order of protection to prevent her abusive spouse from harassing and physically harming her. The trial court denied her petition, finding her allegations of abuse not credible because she was still married to and living with her abuser. An Illinois appellate court reversed the dismissal of our client’s petition—holding that the trial court erred by improperly considering that the petitioner was still living in the marital home—and remanded the case for a new hearing. Building a playhouse Our office is a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity, helping to advance the organizations effort to “build better lives.” In the past, our team has worked on a number of projects, such as the building and decorating of a fire station playhouse for a military family. Sustainable economy: We are committed to delivering legal services to advance sustainability in energy, transportation and land use, including providing pro bono legal services to sustainability-focused entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations.
