people和persons 到底有什么区别

person: a human as an individual(人;个体)

people: persons; men, women and children

复数PLURAL

person的复数有两种形式:

① people

② persons

接下来看两个例句

① There’re 5 persons in his family.

② There’re 5 people in his family.

哪一个正确呢?

这个简单问题并不容易回答。

解析ANALYSIS

首先,people 是集合名词,不考虑个体,也不确定数量。

日常生活中,人们早把它看作“person”的唯一复数形式。因此,第②句可能出现在同事闲聊中,此时用第①句会让人感觉别扭。

也有人认为,在人数容易确定时也可用“persons”,但很少见。

反之,如果强调个体而不考虑群体,则用 persons。

但这一用法限于法律及正式文体,在其它场合使用会有怪异、老派或不合文体的效果。如:

Three persons were arrested.

三人被逮捕

分析:这几个人未必是一伙的,也不一定是同时逮捕的

Persons wishing to carry on hand luggage should consult the steward

欲携带手提行李的乘客须事先向乘务人员咨询

分析:这个说法比较正式,这类乘客之间并无关联

例外用法EXCEPTIONS

某些习惯用语,因历史流传问题仍会用“persons”的复数形式,如:

persons of interest 嫌犯

displaced persons 难民

missing persons 失踪人口
