怎么理解birds of prey?

birds of prey (= birds that kill for food) 猛禽

osprey: a large bird of prey (= a bird that kills other creatures for food) that eats fish 鹗；鱼鹰

prey：an animal, a bird, etc. that is hunted, killed and eaten by another 猎物

那为什么birds of prey (= birds that kill for food)为什么是猛禽的意思呢？

birds of prey 字面意思是猎物的鸟？怎么理解birds of prey?

     【答】在很多情况下，几个单词组合在一起后，译文就不一定是简单地把各个词的意思堆积在一起。如 the City of Beijing 只能翻译成“北京市”，不能翻译成“北京的城市”。又如，US, U.S. 和 USA 都可以翻译为“美国”或“美利坚合众国”，而不能按照它们的非缩写形式 United States 和 United States of America 翻译成 “联合的国家”和“美国的联合的国家”。所以，只要知道和记住 birds of prey 和 birds that kill for food 的意思都是“ 猛禽”就可以了，不能按照字面意思逐个翻译。
