五一期间有条新闻冲上了热搜，两位女性疑似插队，身后的小伙子不乐意，于是二人怒目而视，对男生一顿口诛笔伐。

在现实生活中，我们也会碰到一些没有素质的人。他们会超出规定装修时间，午休时仍在扰民；从楼上扔垃圾；抽烟不分场合，还乱扔烟头；一点小事就骂骂咧咧，张牙舞爪要动手……遇到这些人，我们难免会气上心头，胸中郁结，从而影响到自己原本美好的心情。这种情况下我们该怎样迅速平复下来呢？

我们之前听过的 TED 大都在 10 分钟以上，而今天跟大家分享的这篇动画 TED 只有不到 5 分钟。对于畏惧长文的同学来说，听力负担大大减轻。而且这篇文章和我们的生活息息相关，词汇大都比较简单。另一个值得一提的点在于，这篇演讲也涉及到一些大家眼生，但却是四六级、考研大纲规定的词汇。

对了，演讲者的口音是标准的 RP，即标准的英式读音，非常清晰。待会大家先自己盲听一遍，再看讲解。

One of the most important ways to calm down Is the power to hold on, even in challenging situations, to a distinction between what someone does, and what they meant to do. In law, the difference is enshrined in the contrasting concepts of murder and manslaughter. The result may be the same. The body is inert in a pool of blood. But we collectively feel it makes a huge difference what the perpetrators' intentions were.

整段译文：最重要的平复方法之一是区分某人所做之事及其意图，即便情况比较棘手，也要坚持如此。在法律上，这种差别体现在谋杀和过失杀人这两个对立概念中。二者造成的结果可能一样。尸体倒在血泊中，再无生气。但我们普遍认为，两类罪犯的意图存在很大区别。

hold on to sb / sth

这个短语要注意中间有个 to，不能漏掉。一方面，它可以表示「保留，保存」某物，比如，hold on to letters「保存信件」；另一方面，它有 to keep something rather than losing it, selling it 「守住，保住」之义，尤其是守住那些对己方有利的东西。在这篇演讲中，hold on to a distinction... 直译过来是「守住区别」，但大家会发现，这样的译文太过生硬，所以我们意译为「坚持把……区分开来」。

Firms are now keen to hold on to the people they recruit.

各公司现在都急切地想要留住招聘来的员工。

be enshrined in sth

词根词缀

要想记住 enshrine，我们先来看 shrine。它原指「圣地；神龛」，比如，麦加被尊为 the holiest shrine 「最神圣之地」。后来「圣地」不再仅仅指宗教意义上的圣地，而是泛指「具有重要意义的地方」，尤其是跟名人、著名事件有关之地。

en- 是一个常见的动词性前缀，表示「使……」，比如，enlarge 使变大、enrich 使丰富。所以合在一起后的 enshrine 用来表示「视……为神圣；珍藏」。通常构成搭配 be enshrined in sth 来使用。但在这里，我们直译为「珍藏差别」显然不合适，意译为「差别体现在……」会是更好的选择。

These rights are enshrined in the country's constitution.

这些权利已庄严地载入国家宪法。

近义词区分：murder & manslaughter

通过上面的文段，想必很多同学已经能区分开 murder 和 manslaughter。都是杀人，但 murder 是故意或有预谋地杀人，manslaughter 则是指 the crime of killing sb illegally but not deliberately「过失杀人」。二者的恶意成都不同，murder 更重，所以判刑更严厉。

从语法上来说，murder 兼有名词、动词两种词性，而 manslaughter 只是名词，不能作动词。

inert

六级词汇

虽然 inert 本人并没有出现在四六级大纲中，然而它对应的名词 inertia 却光荣在榜，所以这俩我们都得掌握。在化学中，inert 用来形容「惰性的」物质，比如，氖氩等「惰性气体」，英文为 inert gases。此外，它还可以形容 not very lively or interesting「呆滞的，迟缓的」。我们在吃完午饭后就经常进入「呆滞」状态（怎么办，我吃了晚饭也呆滞）；某些机构办事效率低，也可以用 inert 来修饰。

由此，inertia 也有不同含义。既可以指物质的「惰性」，也可以指人、机构等的「惰性，迟钝」。好，我们读一读 2020 年 7 月六级完形中的一句话。

First, don't indulge in despair, because despair leads to inertia and doing nothing means certain disaster.

首先，不要在绝望中沉沦，因为绝望会导致惰性；而不作为则意味着某种灾难会降临。

collectively

考研词汇

简单但好用的一颗副词。collectively 既可以指多方「共同地」做某件事情，也可以指某个数字累计达到某个值，相当于 in total。形容词是 collective，比如，a collective decision 是「集体决定」。它也常和 responsibility 等名词搭配。我们来看 2021 年 6 月六级真题阅读中一句话。

Genetic selection is a way of exerting influence over others, "the ultimate collective control of human destinies," as writer H. G. Wells put it.

基因选择是对他人施加影响的一种方式，是「对人类共同命运的终极掌控」，作者 H. G. 韦尔斯如是说。

perpetrator

我们在那篇刚讲过，简单复习一遍，动词 perpetrate 是「犯罪；干坏事」，perpetrator 意思是「作恶者；犯罪者」。

We would be so much calmer around adults, if we could resort to some of the unflustered poise we naturally use around children. Small children sometimes behave in really maddening ways. They scream at the person who's looking after them, angrily push away a bowl of animal pasta, and throw away something you've just fetched for them. But we rarely feel personally agitated or wounded by their behavior. And the reason is that we don't assign a negative motive or mean intention to a small person. We reach around for the most benevolent interpretations. We probably think that they're just a bit tired, or their gums are sore, or they're upset by the arrival of a younger sibling. We've got a large repertoire of alternative explanations ready in our heads, and none of these lead us to panic or get terribly agitated.

resort to sth

金牌写作用语 + 四级词汇

resort 表示「度假胜地」是我们很熟悉的用法，自从冬奥会召开后，「滑雪胜地」成了热门去处，其英文便是 ski resorts。而这个单词的另一词性也很常用。比较特殊的是，resort 通常只构成搭配 resort to sth 使用，表示 to make use of sth, especially sth bad，「诉诸；求助于」某物，通常是在没有别的其他方式时求助于一些不好的事物，比如，resort to violence「诉诸暴力」。

We want to resolve this crisis without resorting to violence.

我们想不通过暴力解决这场危机。

unflustered

词根词缀

词典不容易查到这个词汇，但要想搞定它也很简单，只需要去掉两个词缀，就出现了词根 fluster，意思是 to make someone nervous and confused「使紧张，使慌乱」。不过它很少作动词，而是变成形容词 flustered「紧张的，心烦意乱的」，可以替换 nervous, anxious, agitated。

If I look flustered it's because I'm trying to do about twenty things at once.

如果我看上去很慌乱，那是因为我正试图同时做大约20 件事情。

poise

六级词汇

poise 和 pose 只有一个字母之差，作名词时它用来表示 a calm and confident manner「镇定，沉着」。若是用一个成语来翻译，那可以译为「泰然自若」。另外，poise 也可以表示「体态，仪态」。

What amazed him even more than her appearance was her poise.

她的容貌让他惊叹，而更让他惊讶的是她的沉着。

animal pasta

pasta 泛指意大利所有面食，所以西餐出镜率最高的面条——意面也是一种 pasta。意面分为很多种类，最常见的是长条意面 spaghetti 和通心粉 macaroni。animal pasta 更接近通心粉，空心而且很短，只不过形状做成了小朋友喜闻乐见的动物样子，所以我们译为「动物通心粉」更容易让读者想象到形状。

agitated

六级词汇

这个形容词与 nervous，anxious 类似，表示「紧张不安的，焦虑的」。动词是 agitate「使焦虑不安」。

The thought of them getting her possessions when she dies agitates her.

一想到他们可能会在她死后得到她的财产，她就心绪不安。

benevolent

六级词汇 + 考研词汇

有些词当你看到它就会觉得它长得慈眉善目的。benevolent 的意思是 kind, helpful and generous，既可以形容人「仁爱的；乐善好施的」，也可以形容态度、笑容等「和蔼的」。比如，a benevolent smile。

The company has proved to be a most benevolent employer.

事实证明，这家公司是非常好的雇主。

repertoire /ˈrepətwɑː/

六级词汇 + 考研词汇

这个读音奇怪的单词来自法语，它不仅是六级大纲要求大家记忆的词汇，也是考研大纲词汇。其实我们在之前的写作系列中见过它，本义是指「全部剧目，常备节目」，后来词义扩大化，引申为 all the things that a person is able to do，指一个人的「全部技能」。

而且，它常和 of 构成短语 a wide/large repertoire of sth「丰富的，许多的」。所以文中 a large repertoire of alternative explanations 是指「许多其他解释」。下面我们大声朗读 2020 年 7 月六级阅读中的一句话。

Instead of engaging babies in dialog or having them execute complex motor tasks, the newer methods capitalize on behaviors that have a firm place in infants' natural behavior repertoire: looking, listening, sucking, making facial expressions, gestures and simple manual actions.

这些更为新颖的研究方法不是让婴儿参与对话，也不是让他们执行复杂的动作，而是充分利用婴儿已经牢牢掌握的那些自然行为：看、听、吮吸、做表情、做手势以及简单的手部动作。

The calming thought is to imagine that they're suffering off-stage in some area we can't see. To be mature is to learn to imagine this zone of pain in spite of the lack of much available evidence. off-stage

原本表示「舞台外的，幕后的」，舞台之外便是台下，台下的生活才是现实，所以这个词后来引申为「台下的，现实生活中的」。此外，off-stage 还可以作副词。

Despite their bitter screen rivalry, off-stage they are close friends.

虽然他们在银幕上是誓不两立的对手，在现实生活中却是至交。

ailment

四级词汇

相比 illness，ailment 要轻很多。它指的是 an illness that is not very serious「疾病，小病」，比如，minor ailments「不严重的小病」。

动词是去掉 -ment 后缀的 ail， 可以表示「使患病；使不适」，但更常用来表示 to cause problems for sb / sth「使麻烦，困扰」。

This initiative is not the answer to what ails our educational system.

这一方案并不能解决我们教育体制的弊病。

chirpy

这个形容词长用来形容人 happy and active 「欢快的，心情好的」，比如 a chirpy student。相当于 cheerful, lively, spirited 等。
