The Role of Luck in Success

It has been said that when people succeed, it is because of hard work and that luck has nothing to do with success. Although I believe that hard work is very important and is the surest way to success for most people, I must disagree with this statement. It cannot be denied that luck often plays an important role in success. For example, many important discoveries have been made by accident. There have been many cases of researchers and inventors making major breakthroughs while they were actually trying to solve another problem or create a different device. Furthermore, there is something to be said for simply being in the right place at the right time-perhaps meeting someone by chance who can offer a good job or rare opportunity. And of course, there are the rare examples of gamblers and lottery winners who beat the odds and achieve sudden and unexpected success.

While the influence of luck cannot be ignored, this is not to say that one should depend on it and ignore the value of hard work. If one is willing to work hard, I believe that success will eventually be achieved, with or without the added benefit of luck. Moreover, hard work is often an essential ingredient of luck because it enables one to take advantage of a lucky encounter. If the scientist has not worked hard to develop his knowledge and skills, he may not recognize that lucky breakthrough when it comes along. Therefore, my suggestion is not to count on luck to bring you success. Instead, work hard and keep your eyes open for that lucky opportunity.

Faced with the question whether it is worthwhile to spend a year or two voluntee ？？ring in western China， many college students would probably shake their heads， seeing it as a waste of valuable learning time. However， I will give an affirmative answer without hesitation， because this experience can apparently benefit us in many ways.

First， it is a great opportunity for us to ap* the knowledge we have acquired at college. Different from temporary part-time jobs， a longer volunteer work experience is truly fulfilling and rewarding. As English majors， we can learn to use and teach the language effectively in real classes; as education majors， we can experiment with those textbook theories in helping manage a school or instruct the younger; those who study engineering can take this chance to turn their ideas and skills into running machines， new bridges and broad roads. From this experience， we will better understand our schoolwork and even build up considerable expertise in our chosen fields.

Second， we can gain a great sense of satisfaction by making contributions in an underdeveloped region. Right now， the western China is suffering from both the short ？？age of resources and that of talents in its course of development. If we can step into the needed roles by sim* sacrificing a year or two， we will be able to make some differ？？ence to the situation as a whole. Imagine how proud you will be when telling your fami？？ly and friends how you have taught the illiterate to read， and how you have helped to change the look of a backward town. Compared with the great sense of pride you feel， a year‘s time is just a small price to pay.

Third，we can establish a deep friendship with local people. On the one hand， if you truly love and help the people you work with， they naturally love and help you back. Take a senior I know for example， who served two months as a teacher in a dry northwestern town. During the period of water shortage， both his students and their parents voluntarily kept water for him， sometimes despite their own need. Recalling his days there， he said they were not easy but he could not help missing them. Probably many volunteers would feel the same as him. While we are giving care， support and help， we often get back more including a lasting friendship.

Therefore，I will readily sign up to volunteer in the western China despite various challenges I may meet. Think of the differences we can make there and the changes this experience can make to us， why not walk out of the ivory tower and step onto the promising land of our country？

由设题的特点可知，考点主要集中在主题、分论点或结论句中出现 的关键性名词、动词和形容词等，或对某一事物特点的描述以及分 述各点时的细节描述性词汇。这些关键词都是基于整个问题要点 及其重要细节的实词(即除去介词、连词、冠词、语气词等虚词)。

另外，各类表顺承、因果等关系的逻辑词，可提示文章的具体细节，帮 助考生把握文章的整体走向，考生在听的过程中要对这类词格外注意。

3) 注意讲话人的语音、语调

专八作文需注意两个方面

高校英语专业八级考试大纲写作部分规定：写作部分设一题，20分，要求能根据所给题目及要求撰写各类体裁的文章，文章长度约400个单词，能做到内容充实、语言通顺、用词恰当、表达得体。真题在Directions的最后会告知考生：“Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks”。考试时间45分钟。

笔者认为，要考好专八作文，应从以下几个方面入手。

首先，必须对以上提到的对作文部分的要求做到充分了解，按照要求写作。有些同学由于轻视，只根据考试前自己看到的一些其他考试的英语写作模版(如大学英语六级或研究生入学考试英语写作模版)来对付八级，结果与考试要求的文章结构和字数不符，造成严重失分。

其次，必须在考前的一段时间做严格的限时应试练习，以保证在考场上时间比较紧张的情况下发挥出自己真正的水平。通过练习，主要是提高自己两个方面的素质：

一是进行逻辑思维的素质。与大学英语四、六级、考研以及专业四级考试不同，专八写作要求的字数更多，更体现思维的深度和广度，因此必须通过练习来促使自己提高逻辑思维的速度和质量。我固然会在课堂上教给大家一些常见的思维方法，如分类法、反证法、举例法、因果法等等，但更具体的素材需要大家平时去积累。其实如果没有考试，大家是会比较懒惰的，懒于去梳理自己的思维，形成比较成熟的观点。我们在这里且不多提考试的好处，关键的是我们可以以备考为契机，通过练习来提高思考的速度，并且更重要的.是养成一种勤于思考、广泛涉猎的习惯，去关心家事、国事、天下事。这样考试的时候才会有话可说，字数才会够。

另外一个是应用英语语言的素质。有些同学不愁没话说，思维也很有广度和深度，但英语语言还是存在问题。这里面有一部分同学是重视不够，忽视了语法问题，出现了不少诸如单复数、冠词、词性等语法错误，甚至还有标点符号错误。而更多的同学是由于缺乏写作练习，在用词和造句方面做得不够好。作为代表我国英语技能教育最高水平的考试，专八肯定会比国内其他英语考试更加重视语言的质量。其实也很简单，就是用词和造句的准确性和多样性。这里的用词准确既包括词义准确，也包括搭配准确，还包括词语的感情色彩和正式程度的准确;造句的多样是指多种英语句式的灵活运用。这要求同学们平时一定要多做辨析词义、熟记搭配的工作，并且模仿优秀的文章进行写作。

Clear Your Mental Space

Think about the last time you felt a negative emotion-like stress, anger, or frustration. What was going through your mind as you were going through that negativity? Was your mind cluttered with thoughts? Or was it paralyzed, unable to think?

The next time you find yourself in the middle of a very stressful time, or you feel angry or frustrated, stop. Yes, that’s right, stop. Whatever you’re doing, stop and sit for one minute. While you’re sitting there, completely immerse yourself in the negative emotion.

Allow that emotion to consume you. Allow yourself one minute to truly feel that emotion. Don’t cheat yourself here. Take the entire minute---but only one minute---to do nothing else but feel that emotion.

When the minute is over, ask yourself, “Am I wiling to keep holding on to this negative emotion as I go through the rest of the day?”

Once you’ve allowed yourself to be totally immersed in the emotion and really fell it, you will be surprised to find that the emotion clears rather quickly.

If you feel you need to hold on to the emotion for a little longer, that is OK. Allow yourself another minute to feel the emotion.

When you feel you’ve had enough of the emotion, ask yourself if you’re willing to carry that negativity with you for the rest of the day. If not, take a deep breath. As you exhale, release all that negativity with your breath.

This exercise seems simple---almost too simple. But, it is very effective. By allowing that negative emotion the space to be truly felt, you are dealing with the emotion rather than stuffing it down and trying not to feel it. You are actually taking away the power of the emotion by giving it the space and attention it needs. When you immerse yourself in the emotion, and realize that it is only emotion, it loses its control. You can clear your head and proceed with your task.

Try it. Next time you’re in the middle of a negative emotion, give yourself the space to feel the emotion and see what happens. Keep a piece of paper with you that says the following:

Stop. Immerse for one minute. Do I want to keep this negativity? Breath deep, exhale, release. Move on!

This will remind you of the steps to the process. Remember; take the time you need to really immerse yourself in the emotion. Then, when you feel you’ve felt it enough, release it---really let go of it. You will be surprised at how quickly you can move on from a negative situation and get to what you really want to do!

Some people like to eat out at food stands and restaurants, while others like to prepare food at home. Often it depends on the kind of lifestyle people have. Those with very busy jobs outside the house don’t always have time to cook. They like the convenience of eating out. Overall, though, it is cheaper and healthier to eat at home. While eating in restaurants is fast, the money you spendcan add up. When I have dinner at restaurant with a friend, the bill is usually over twenty dollars. I can buy a lot of groceries with that much money. Even lunch at a fast-food stand usually costs five or six dollars for one person. That’s enough to feed the whole family at home.

Eating at home is better for you, too. Meals at restaurants are often high in fat and calories, and they serve big plates of food--much more food than you need to eat at one meal. If you cook food at home, you have more control over the ingredients. You can use margarine instead of butter on your potatoes, or not put so much cheese on top of your pizza. At home, you can control your portion size. You can serve yourself as little as you want. In a restaurant, you may eat a full plate of food ^v^because you paid for it^v^. It’s true that eating out is convenient. You don’t have to shop, or cook, or clean up. But real home cooking doesn’t have to take a lot of time. There are lots of simple meals that don’t take long to make. A Factory near the Neighborhood

Having a factory near where one lives brings with it both advantages and disadvantages. An obvious advantage is an increase in the number of available jobs, and many people in the community might find employment in the new factory. In my opinion, originality创意, 新奇is not important in language learning. The reason why I think so is that language learning does not need originality as a vital condition条件.

Originality is less important to an English learner. A case in point恰当的例子 is in pronunciation. Every English learner has to spend a long and boring period of time on a large amount of大量 training of pronunciation. During those days, what students do is to try their best to imitate teacher's pronunciations about English words and make the sound of them, and then repeat them time by time. To an English learner, the experience is of great use很有用 to improve his pronunciation. From this case we can see clearly the great importance of imitation or repetition rather than originality or creativity in the beginning of language learning.

Originality refers to creativity which amounts to changes, but there are many formed rules which cannot be changed in language, such as grammatical rules. We cannot create a new grammatical rule. If one who speaks English wants to make the other peopler understand him, he must speak it according to English grammar; otherwise nobody would understand him. Some people like to eat out at food stands and restaurants, while others like to prepare food at home. Often it depends on the kind of lifestyle people have. That can binder your ability to really understand the subject.

Learning a subject on your own is a very narrow way of learning. You can only use the information you get from the textbook. With a teacher, you get the information in the written materials as well as the teacher’s own knowledge of the topic. Teachers can also provide extra materials to broaden the scope of what you’re learning.

I am afraid to sleep. I have been afraid to sleep for the last few weeks. I am so tired that, finally, I do sleep, but only for a few minutes. It is not a bad dream that wakes me ; it is the realiry I took with me into sleep . I try to think of something else.

Immediately the woman in the marketplace comes into my mind.

I was on my way to dinner last night when I saw her . She was selling skirts. She moved with the same ease and loveliness I often saw in the women of Laos. Her long black hair was as shiny as the black silk of the skirts she was selling . In her hair, she wore three silk ribbons, blue ,green, and white. They meminded me of my childhood and how my girlfriends and I used to spend hours braiding ribbons into our hair.

I don’t know the word for “ribbons”, so I put my hand to my own hair and , with three fingers against my head , I looked at her ribbons and said “Beautiful.” She lowered her eyes and said nothing. I wasn’t sure if she understood me (I don’t speak Laotian very well).

I looked back down at the skirts. They ahd designs in them: squares and triangles and circles of pink and green silk. They were very pretty. I decided to buy one of those skirts, and I began to bargain with her over the price. It is the custom to bargain in Asia. In Laos bargaining is done in soft voices and easy moves with the sort of quiet peacefulness.

She smiled, more with her eyes than with her lips. She was pleased by the few words I was able to say in her language, although they were mostly numbers, and she saw that I understood something about the soft playfulness of bargaining. We shook our heads in disagreement over the price; then, immediately, we made another offer and then another shake of the head. She was so pleased that unexpectedly, she accepted the last offer I made. But it was too soon. The price was too low. She was being too generous and wouldn’t make enough money. I moved quickly and picked up two more skirts and paid for all three at the price set; that way I was able to pay her three times as much before she had a chance to lower the price for the larger purchase. She smiled openly then, and, for the first time in months, my spirit lifted. I almost felt happy.

The feeling stayed with me while she wrapped the skirts in a newspaper and handed them to me. When I left, though, the feeling left, too. It was as though it stayed behind in marketplace. I left tears in my throat. I wanted to cry. I didn’t , of course.

I have learned to defend myself against what is hard; without knowing it, I have also learned to defend myself against what is soft and what should be easy.

I get up, light a candle and want to look at the skirts. They are still in the newspaper that the woman wrapped them in. I remove the paper, and raise the skirts up to look at them again before I pack them. Something falls to floor. I reach down and feel something cool in my hand. TREAT STUDENTS AS ADULTS, NOT CHILDREN

Some time ago, China’s Ministry of Education banned university students from renting private accommodation during their studies. This has given rise to a heated discussion. Some people, especially school management and most parents, embrace such a ban, while others criticize it fiercely. Personally, I am against the ban.

First, most college students are *s and should enjoy the right to choose where to live. In banning off-campus housing, the education authorities seem to believe that college students, most aged 18-22, should be treated as children, rather than *s. Some administrators claim that students lack self-control and cannot make proper decisions for themselves. This is surely not fair treatment for such a bright young generation. If these students didn’t attend colleges, but worked in companies or joined the army, they would be treated as *s.

Secondly, private accommodation is indeed preferable to living on campus for many students. It is true that living on campus promotes a sense of belonging by being closely connected with other students. This could truly be a valuable part of the four-year college education. Students living on campus also have easier access to vast school resources, such as libraries, com*r rooms and various evening seminars. But crowded dormitories, high noise levels, early electricity curfews and other strict codes also make dorms less attractive. At least dorms are not the right home for everyone. Off-campus housing, meanwhile, offers a greater degree of freedom. That is especially true for self-motivated students, students studying late for important tests or working late on academic projects. Many students living off-campus also share rooms. They have to negotiate contracts, pay utilities and probably cook for themselves. All help prepare students to better manage their study and life. In fact this also conforms to most schools’ creed that students should be in touch with the real world as much as possible.

One of the motives for the housing ban is that education authorities hope this will help prevent students from cohabitation and having sex during school years. But since students can now legally marry in schools, why should they be banned from having sex? Reality tells us that this is wishful thinking. Banning sex among students has been and will be a mission impossible. This is probably why some schools have installed condom vending machines on campus or provide free condoms in school clinics, which tells students to have safe sex, rather than no sex.

To sum up, we should treat students as *s instead of children. Though there might be problems in allowing students to leave off campus, we should not give up eating for fear of choking, as the Chinese idiom says. In today’s diversified world, schools should show respect to students in making their own choices. After all, schools are not military barracks and students are not soldiers.
