it be QDLP,FMC,PFM or WMC.There are close to 100 new players renewing their interest in China or committing to a larger presence.There will be 3 categories of players,they are,a.Full licenses with joint venture(large size with 150 plus employees)b.Full licenses and operating as a single entity(mid-size with 60 to 120 employees)c.Selected licenses with niche products(small size with less than 80 employees)For the past 3 months,we notice Blackrock and Fidelity being the most active in hirings and business expansion.For example,Blackrock is the first foreign money manager to have obtain CSRCs approval for a mutual fund business with a minimum of 50 headcounts.Secondly,there is the Wealth Management Company joint venture with Temasek and China Construction Bank where they can create onshore products for local market.Also,we expect Fidelity and Neuberger Berman to lead the charge for some hirings but we more selective and cost conscious as compare to others.This is due to the business model and products on offer.Finally,there will be some small size foreign money managers taking a more prudent and organic approach to build a China outlet with minimal commitment and a wait and see strategy.Some market trends,i.China CEO/General Manager-Ex-regulator with overseas education,work experience and a stint with local money manager.We can see this with Blackrock,Vanguard and Amundi.ii.Shanghai is selected as the Asia headquarters by Vanguard and few others(expect more announcements in 2021).China remains a positive prospect for many global investors during this pandemic with a strong performance by the equity market.iii.English communication is not the main language.Judging by the number of open roles since Q2 of 2020,we are told by hiring managers that English is no longer a must have,instead local expertise and experience is preferred.One hiring manager mention,the best buy side professionals are with the local firms.If you can capture these critical talents,your China business will be secure.For example,client service,product and sales/business development.Lastly,new hiring trend will focus more on talent with track record and direct experience.Rarely will we see commercial bankers,investment bankers being cross hired into this sector.p.732.Commercial banks another disappointing 2020 with many closing some business units due to consequences of the pandemic.We have seen Abn Amro,ING Bank,Socit Gnrale and Standard Chartered Bank restructuring their business model using cost control and elimination of none performing business units.The new trend lies with digital banking and blockchain,we expect more investments in talent who can create AI related wealth advisory services.We expect to see a rise in hiring of AI related engineers in this area.Also,we see some of the largest banks in the world already embracing blockchain technology,such as JP Morgan,Goldman Sachs and Bank of America.Blockchain technology offers speed,security,transparency and cost management.This explains the rise in several blockchain related businesses in China,Hong Kong and Singapore.The rise will continue into 2021.3.Wealth Management the battle for wealth talent continues to rise in 2020 and is expected to gain momentum into 2021.We receive multiple projects from local and foreign banks in the range of 30 to 60 headcounts in 10K to 20K per month.With new entrant such as Wealth Management Company,the retail investors will be spoiled for choices,but the product remain strongly on equities and trusts.Wealth hiring managers will face an uphill battle in securing the right talent as many local banks too are building a new wealth management business,they are Guotai Junan,Bank of Shanghai and CICC(including a family office)4.Securities/Investment Banking With new foreign banks looking to enter the market,such as BNP Pariba,Citibank,Standard Chartered Bank and Socit Gnrale.The real question lies with,what is your expected to have a rosier year in 2021 with onshore IPO activities.Closely trailing NASDAQ,the Shanghai Stock Exchange came second in funds raised,backed by sizeable listings and the STAR Markets continuing popularity.By the end of June,the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange are expected to record a total of 124 new listings,for a total of RMB 141.7 billion.This will mark an increase of 135 percent in the A-share market in terms of funds raised compared with the same period last year.Investment bankers from local banks are expected to have a higher bonus for 2020
