一、副学士学位（Associate Degree）

也称作准学士学位，读完两年制社区大学或职业技术学院所得到学位。在学术学习课程以外，美国的高等院校还为高级职业培训提供实践课程。这种课程一般由两年制的“社区大学”提供。学生完成两年的学习后，除了发给证书和文凭以外，还可以获得“副学士学位”。

具体的学位如下：

副学士学位中AAS是最为普遍，学生学习通识课程，也可以在选取一些特定领域的课，将来转学到本科大学去获取学士学位。AOS是一个通识教育学位，不会上很多非常细的专业课。值得一提的是美国的GoldenFour，基本上每个学校的学生都要上的课，也是能够以transfer（转学生）身份申请至少要修过的课程：Math、English、CriticalThinking、Public Speaking。

美国学生获得的学位一般是“文学学士(BA)”或“理学学士(BS)”，在完成为期四年的学业以后颁发。在头两年学习期间，美国学生要学习普通学科领域的一些必修课程，第二年结束后选择一门(或两门)专业课，剩下的两年就学习这些学科领域内的课程(尽管他们并不受其限制)。获得学士学位以后，多数美国人会结束他们的“学习生涯”，开始找工作。我们把以获得BA/BS学位为目标的四年制课程学习称作“本科学习”。

在美国有超过1000所学校提供硕士学位，大体分为偏学术型和偏授课型。偏学术型的多授予于Master of Science等学位，某些学院开设的MS学位是为读博做准备的，还有些学院的博士项目，如果读不下来，修够一定的学分可以授予硕士学位；偏授课型或应用型，多授予Master of Arts学位，应用型硕士的代表当属MBA了。大多数纯文科的硕士如教育学硕士、社会学硕士、传媒学硕士等需要读两年的时间，大多数理工科硕士如生物学硕士、计算机专业硕士等也是需要读两年的时间，艺术类硕士大部分也是读2年的时间，商科除MBA外大部分硕士读一年到一年半，法学硕士一年的学位类别有：

文学硕士M.A.(Master of Arts)：属于人文、艺术或社会科学的领域，如文学、教育、艺术、音乐等。

理学硕士M.S.或M.Sc(Master ofScience)：属理工、科学的领域，如数学、物理、信息等。

双学位(Dual Degree)：是由两个不同学院分别授予，因此得到的是两个学位。Major：主修，Minor：辅修。联合学位（Joint Degree）：由两个不同学院联合给予一个学位，如公共卫生学院和管理学院合办的健康政策与管理硕士。

在美国，获取博士学位需要三到六年的时间。法学和法律博士一般是三年，其他专业一般是五年。博士研究的第一阶段一般为期两年，结束时要对此前所学所有学科领域进行一次总体考试，称为“初试”或“资格考试”，通过后就可以开始为博士毕业论文进行研究。
