LESSON 141 give(someone) a hand 帮忙；喝采

NO01 This is heavy; can you give mea hand?

好重，可以帮我忙吗？

give (someone) a hand 作“帮助”的意思时，中文翻译“伸出援手”是相当贴近英文的。和这个短语意思相似的还有help (someone) out、do (someone) a favor。

如果是帮了别人“某个忙”，则可在give (someone) a hand 后面加上with，例如，“我来帮你拿袋子。”，英文就是∶

●Let me give you a hand with your bag.

在第三和第四个例句中，give (someone) a hand 是用在“观众替（某人）喝采”，此时我们也可以说have a show of applause。

LESSON 142 give (someone) a hard time 责备；开玩笑

NO01 The teacher gave us a hard time about fooling around in class.

老师因为我们上课鬼混骂了我们一顿。

NO02 It was only a mistake; stop givingme a hard timeabout it.

这只是个错误，不要再为这个骂我了。

读者请注意！这个短语是give (someone) a hard time。不可以说hard times ！time 加了s 变成times，指的是“时代”，而hard times 就成了“艰苦的时代”。

give (someone) a hardtime 而这个短语在当“责骂”用的时候，常常会和about 连用，后面加上“骂人的理由”。例如，在第一个例句中，老师骂人的理由就是在about 后面的上课鬼混（fooling around in class）。

除此之外，give (someone) a hard time 还有一个意思，就是“让（某人）很不好受”或是“刁难（某人），存心找碴”的意思。例如，我们可以说：

●He gave me a hard time when I worked withhim.

我在跟他共事的时候，他对我百般刁难。

LESSON 143 give (someone) a piece of (one's) mind 愤怒地抱怨

NO01 Frank'sboss gave him a piece of her mindwhen she learned of his mistake.

弗兰克的老板发现了他的错误，就狠狠削了他一顿。

NO02 The restaurant's service makes me angry; I'mgoing to give the manager a piece of my mind!

这家餐厅的服务令我火大，我要去跟经理表达我的抱怨！

give (someone) a pieceof (one's) mind 用英文解释，就是complain angrily。这个短语的相反短语是forgive andforget 以及turn the other cheek。

forgive and forget 我们可以比较容易从字面上了解，就是“原谅和忘记”的意思，近似中文的“不念旧恶”。

至于turn the other cheek 读者可能会疑惑为什么是教别人“以德报怨”。其实这个短语是出自于圣经中耶稣的教训。耶稣说过：如果有人打你的左脸，那你就把你的右脸也转过来给他打。这就是turn the other cheek 的典故。所以turn the other cheek 就是“容忍”的意思。

一起看看下面的例子。增进对这两个短语的了解：

●The best way to get revenge is to turn theother cheek.

报复最好的方式就是把另外一边的脸也转过去，以德报怨。

LESSON 144 give away 赠送；表露

NO01 My sister gave awayall her old CDs.

她的眼神显露出真实的感情。

give away 作“赠送”用是“把东西给别人”，而“泄漏”则是“把事情或消息让别人知道”，从上面两个解释，我们可以了解到这个短语的意思就是“送（某人）（某物）”。

如果give away 可以指“赠送”，那“赠品”的英文要怎么说？

没错，就是giveaway！英文中有很多动词短语会转成名词用，例如，outcome（结果）是从come out 来的，breakthrough（重大发现）则是从break through 来的。

give away 指“泄露”时，还有一个很有趣的短语！英文中give the game away 的意思是“露出马脚，露馅”。例如：

●The thief gave the game away.

小偷露出了马脚。

除此之外，give away 还可以用在婚礼上！在西式婚礼上，会有一位男性长辈（通常是新娘的父亲）牵着新娘的手走向祭坛，并将新娘交给等在祭坛的新郎，是(someone) gives (a woman) away。

当一对男女互许终身，交换誓言时，这则代表这名女子将委身于他的良人。所以，这句话就是a woman gives herself to a man。

LESSON 145 give back 交还

NO01 Please give the pen backwhen you're done.

做完时请把笔交还。

NO02 Joshuaforgot to give back the thingshe borrowed.

约书亚忘了把他借的东西归还。

give back 作“交还”用的时候，与return 意思相同。使用时，我们可以把“要交还的东西”放在give 和back 的中间，如例句一，或是放在give back 的后面，如例句二。

不过如果“要交还的东西”变成代名词时，就只能放在give 和back 中间。例如，“把那个还来”英文就只能说give that back！

LESSON 146 give it a try 试试看

NO01 George gave the game a try, but he didn't like it.

乔治试玩一下这个游戏，不过他并不喜欢。

NO02 I can't open this jar; you give ita try.

这罐子我打不开，你来试试看。

give it a try 是很常用的短语，其他相似的短语如下：

●give it a shot

●give it a crack

●take a crack at

●have a try

●take a shot

另外一个相关的短语give it (one's) best shot，中文的意思是“尽（某人）所能”。我们可以一起看看下面的例句，了解这个短语的用法：

●Donald gave it his best shot, but stilldid not succeed.

唐纳德尽了他最大的努力，仍然没有成功。

●The best you can do is give it your bestshot.

你能使出的最上策就是全力以赴。

当然，我们先前学到的do (one's) best 和do (one's) utmost 就与give it (one's) best shot 的意思相同。

LESSON 147 give off 发出（味道、声音等）

NO01 The paint gave offa terrible smell.

油漆的味道好重。

NO02 The alarm gave offa loud warning sound.

警铃声大作。

give off 通常是放出“光、声、热等物质”。例如，“水开的时候会释放出蒸汽”。英文的表达方式是when the water boils, it gives off steam。

give off 也常常和odor（臭味）或smell（味道）、aroma（香味）连用，例如，我们可以说the flowers give off a nice smell，意思就是“这些花散发出馨香的味道”。

LESSON 148 give up 戒除；认输；投降

NO01 Markfinally gave up smoking.

马克终于戒烟了。

NO02 You should give up motorcycle riding; it is too dangerous.

你不要再骑车了，太危险了。

NO03 Estellegave upwhenshe saw that I was going to win the chess game.

埃斯特尔看到我快要下赢这盘棋时，她认输了。

give up 在第一个和第二个例句中指的是“放弃某种习惯”或是“不再做某件事”。另外一个意思相似的短语是kick the habit，指的就是“革除习惯”，不过这个短语常常和吸菸连用，像是kick the smoking habit 或是kick the habit ofsmoking，都是“戒烟”的意思。

give up 也可以指在比赛中“认输”的意思，与give in 和throw in the towel 意思相似。givein 是“让步”的意思，那为什么“丢毛巾”也是“认输”的意思呢？

这个短语是出自于拳击比赛。在拳赛中，拳击手通常会带条毛巾上场，在每一回合结束后，拳击手会在场边用毛巾拭汗。如果在比赛中，其中一方已经被打到毫无招架之力，他的教练有权要求停止比赛。停止比赛的方式就是把毛巾丢进场内，这时，裁判就会喊停，当然，另一方就也赢得比赛了。且看下列例句：

●After running two miles of the marathon, Andy and Jessicadecided to throw in the towel.

跑了两英里的马拉松比赛之后，安迪和杰西卡决定放弃比赛。

LESSON 149 give out 分发；报销

NO01 The teacher gavethe papers outto students.

老师把报告发给学生。

NO02 How many advertisements did you give out?

你发了几张广告单？

NO03 The old car finally gave outhalfwayup the hill.

这辆老爷车在爬坡爬到一半的时候终于寿终正寝。

NO04 Marywas sure her knees were going to give out.

玛丽知道她的膝盖终将报销。

give out 作“分发”的时候，可在后面加to 加“要分发的对象”。另外一个类似的短语是hand out。

give out 的第二个意思是“东西因年代久远或因为损坏而不能使用”。英文中和“损坏”相关的短语还有break down 和wear out，我们一起来看这些短语的异同之处。

●break down

通常是指“机器”坏掉。可以用在“车子，引擎，电脑”等机器。例如，我们要说“我的笔记本电脑突然死机了”，英文就是my laptop just broke down。

●wear out

wear out 是指“东西因为年久，而渐渐磨损至不能使用的地步”，这个短语和give out 的意思较为相似。不过要注意的是，“机器”的损坏不会用wear out，而是用give out。wear out这个短语通常是指“衣物或是鞋子”的磨损。

另外，give out 也可以用在“宣布消息”，例如，“据称，总统被暗杀了”英文是it was given out that the President wasassassinated。
