Mr David Cairns has lived in Beijing for over five years and is delighted to be part of the senior leadership team at Chaoyang Kaiwen Academy. Having taught at another International School in Beijing before Chaoyang Kaiwen Academy, Mr David Cairns wants to impart his knowledge of the International Baccalaureate programme and create an enriching and engaging environment for students to learn and develop.

Although he has had many highlights of his decade-long teaching career, the most significant recent achievement has been achieving over 65% A* to A iGCSE pass rate for English literature and language. This figure is 45% above the global average.

In addition, Mr David Cairns has a keen interest in debating. In 2015, he becomes heavily involved in the World Scholar’s Cup; an academic public-speaking event which over 100,000 students participate in globally. Having tutored students during ASA times, he has seen the living proof that passion, public speaking and having an understanding of rhetoric can lead to students will become the leaders of tomorrow. In his previous school, he occupied the role of a middle-leader.

Can you explain how students are taught at Kaiwen Academy?

The first thing to understand regarding the PYP is that students, over each academic year, will cover six transdisciplinary themes. These themes are ‘Who We Are’, ‘How We Express Ourselves’, ‘How We Organize Ourselves’, ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’, ‘Sharing the Planet’ and ‘How the World Works’. Each year, students will expand their knowledge of these units and develop a stronger, conceptual understanding of their importance in the world.

As a PYP school, we are preparing students to be active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. In reality, we are aiming to encourage students to realize that learning never stops and that learning becomes a huge part of our past, present and future. Through the teaching of the Primary Years Programme, we aim to educate students on International-Mindedness.

Within each grade, students develop and enhance their knowledge by revisiting the six major transdisciplinary themes each year. The content differs year upon year, progressively increasing in difficulty through a comprehensive and spiraling curriculum.

In addition to teaching using the IB Primary Years Programme, we blend the Cambridge International Education Curriculum and the Chinese National Curriculum. This provides Kaiwen Academy with a unique-blended curriculum which provides students an excellent platform to grow and develop.

What is Unit of Inquiry?

Unit of Inquiry is a six to eight weeks, in-depth, exploration of a conceptual idea. As a subject, Unit of Inquiry is a combination of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Through student-led inquiries, the children at Chaoyang Kaiwen Academy will develop a better understanding of the world we live in and be guided through the learning process by lines of inquiry and teacher questions.

Other teachers, through careful planning, will link their subjects back to the Unit of Inquiry and ensure that transdisciplinary connections are integrated within their teaching and learning. An example of this in practice has recently been seen in Grade 5. The children are currently focusing on the ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit, which sees them discover new ways to reduce the amount of plastic that we use. In Chinese culture curriculum, students have designed and created reusable bags for life. Students will explore Ancient-Chinese printing methods to ensure authenticity in design. Regarding other subjects, in Music students will create a song that links to their learning within the Unit of Inquiry lesson. It really is amazing to see so many teachers working hard together to ensure that the education of our children receives one of the best in the world.

How do the teachers at Chaoyang Kaiwen Academy teaches?

This is an interesting question and one that the school’s senior leadership team has worked on extensively. Through professional development, our teachers have developed a greater understanding as to how to make the PYP happen, how to best assess students and how to incorporate both student-led activities and play-based learning. Much of the professional development offered to our staff connects back to the educational theorist Benjamin Bloom.

Since its refinement in 2001, Bloom’s taxonomy has provided teachers and students with a better understanding of how we best learn. By putting an emphasis on creating, as opposed to simply remembering information, students are proven to achieve greater results. Our teaching philosophy is both enriching and engaging and, when questioned, students will demonstrate their sheer pleasure at the way they are taught at Chaoyang Kaiwen Academy. No lesson is boring, instead a variety of tasks are provided within each class to ensure a consistent and engaging programme.

How do we assess?

As part of the Unit of Inquiry, students will complete a minimum of two formative assessments and one summative assessment. These will guide future learning and provide students with a platform for future growth.

Within all subjects, teachers will adhere to the same mark-scheme which has been designed to promote English acquisition. By focusing on English acquisition, we are best preparing our students for positive destinations and the best universities in the world.

We don’t only focus on the areas for development and things that students have done wrong in their work; instead, through careful assessment policies we are able to assist in their next steps – this method is called feedback and feedforward and is a proven, effective method to ensure student progress.

In addition, we have examination weeks throughout the year. These exams are in line with the Cambridge International Examination Board and will see students tested in English, Science, and Mathematics. For Chinese Language, students will complete an examination in keeping with the requirements of the Chinese National Curriculum.

In the future, we are looking at creating a single-point rubric for assessment. This is an exciting development for Chaoyang Kaiwen Academy. It is a method proven to propel students’ learning even further and becomes self-motivating as a result of the careful feedback and feedforward strategies included.
