Amanda Cheu Engineer

Amanda graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) at National University of Singapore (NUS).

My job

The Rail Assets, Operations and Maintenance Group (RAOM) was established in 2016 to oversee condition assurance and maintenance of railway assets. My team and I oversee the renewals, modifications and changes to Rail Operations & Maintenance processes. My job also requires me to work closely with rail operators like SBST and SMRT to ensure that timely rail asset management decisions are made for daily operations.

How I got my job

I submitted my resume in February 2016 at the LTA booth during the NUS career fair. Not long later, I was contacted for an interview. My application process consisted of an interview, and an application essay which I had to complete before my interview commenced. During the interview, I was assessed on several qualities including leadership and communication skills in addition to my engineering competencies.

Life as an engineer

Life in LTA is fast paced, ever-changing and exciting. Here, new circumstances and information constantly affect decision-making. Accurate decision making requires not only teamwork, but also inter-divisional collaboration. Despite this, knowing that my work affects the experience of commuters daily gives me a sense of fulfilment that makes it all worthwhile.

Some advice

Critical thinking skills to problem solving would give you an edge, as LTA contributes to the development of the rail industry. With the expansion of the rail network from 230 km today to 360 km by 2030, the land transport engineering sector is one which you can consider joining for challenging career opportunities.
