among 用法, 詳解, 與between 用法有何區別？

問：《英語常用詞用法辭典》(修訂版, 北大西語系編, 商務印書館, p.57) 上說: among用於三者或三者以上“之間”, 而between 卻只用於二者“之間”。許多英語著作都是這樣解釋between 和among 的區別的。但我經常看到between 用於三者或者三者以上“之間”的情形。例如: He divided his money between his five sons.請解釋。

答：許多現代英語學者已經不用這種方法來解釋among 用法與between 用法了。例如A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language 的作者們(R. Quirk 等人) 說:

“between 用於某一物體的位置與一組特定的可分離事物之間的關係, 而among 用於表示某一物體的位置與非分離事物之間的關係。”Collins Dictionary of English Usage 的編者說:“between 可以用來表示三個以上的事物之間的關係, 但這裡通常具有分離的關系, 而among 可以指數目不確定的事物”。

例如:

問：Basically, the theory proposed, among other things, that the maximum speed possible in the universe is that of light. (American Men of Science and Invention. P. 100)[原譯] 相對論的基本點認為, 在一切事物中, 光的速度是宇宙間最大的速度。(《美國科學家與發明家》, p. 54)among other things 是作“在一切事物中”解嗎?

答：among other things 這個among 用法是成語, 意思是“除了別的事情之外, 還……”、“其中”。在本句中它是修飾proposed 的副詞, 意謂這一理論“除提出其它論點之外, 還提出 …… ”, 而不是像原譯文所說的那樣, 是指“在一切事物當中”。再說, 既然說光速是宇宙間最大的速度, 那麼再加上“ 在一切事物中”, 還有什麼意義呢? 類似的例子:

The conference discussed, among other things, the problem of environmental protection.除了其他問題以外, 會議還討論了環境保護問題。
