第238期：熬通宵到底怎么说？

今天我们来学一个美国俚语，在美国学生中非常流行的一个俚语pull an all-nighter，意思是“熬通宵”。

熬夜在英语中有很多种说法，比较普通的可以说stay up late at night；很多人知道一个英语成语burn the midnight oil，一般字典译为“开夜车”，也是熬夜的意思。但这个成语太老了，典型的cliche（陈词滥调）。英美年轻人已经很少有人再说这个成语了。

all-nighter字形很简单，就是all和night用连字符合成了一个词，后面加了个-er. 英语中有很多-er, or结尾的名词，不要看见这个后缀就以为是“什么什么人”的意思。all-nighter可不是熬通宵的人，而是通宵这件事。

来看all-nighter的英语解释：

something that lasts all night; specifically : an all-night study session （韦伯斯特字典）

A study or work session that goes through the night; studying without sleep ( usually a last-minute course of action ).

Urban Dictionary的解释是：

Staying awake, usually with the aid of caffeine and cold showers, for over 24 hours. Usually a feat performed by overworked students, but also by physicians and programmers, and other individuals who refuse to sleep until having solved some mystery. 

这个词一般指的是考试前临时抱佛脚通宵复习、做作业或者通宵赶工完成一项工作，所以学生用得多。当然也可以指通宵喝酒、party等活动，只要是通宵的事，一般都可以叫all-nighter. 

这个词基本只有一个搭配，就是pull an all-nighter. 这样说的时候，就是指通宵学习或赶工，没有别的意思了。

例句：

I have to pull an all-nighter to finish a report. My boss needs it the first thing in the morning tomorrow. 

今天我得通宵把一份报告赶出来。老板明天一早要用。
