Tennessee basketball rising junior Jahmai Mashack recently was selected to represent the Southeastern Conference on the NCAA Men's Basketball Oversight Committee's (MBOC) Student-Athlete Engagement Group.

This select collection of Division I men's basketball student-athletes meets virtually throughout the year to provide greater opportunity for the MBOC to gather feedback and input on current and anticipated discussion topics related to the college game.

"It's an honor to be selected as part of this special group," Mashack said. "Representing the SEC is something I will take very seriously. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have input on different topics related to our sport, and it's not something I'll take for granted."

The NCAA has similar student-athlete engagement groups specific to football and women's basketball, with one representative from each Division I conference.

Mashack currently serves on the 2022-23 SEC Men's Basketball Leadership Council and is also enrolled in UT's prestigious VOLeaders Academy, a year-long student-athlete leadership curriculum.

SEC Associate Commissioner for Men's Basketball Dan Leibovitz is an outgoing member of the NCAA MBOC and has observed Mashack's participation as part of the SEC Men's Basketball Leadership Council.

"The SEC's Student-Athlete Leadership Council will have prepared Jahmai to be a leader on the NCAA's MBOC Student-Athlete Engagement Group," Leibovitz said. "This is a tremendous opportunity for him to provide insight on issues related to student-athlete experience, student-athlete wellness and playing rules on a national level.

As a sophomore this past season, Mashack made 13 starts—including all three of Tennessee's NCAA Tournament games—and earned a reputation as one of the SEC's best perimeter defenders. The Vols advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the ninth time in program history.

He scored in double figures six times, including a career-high 16 points at Kentucky on Feb. 18. For the season, he averaged 4.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game—all career-bests.

A Psychology major, Mashack also earned 2023 CSC Academic All-District honors with a 3.64 GPA.
