what主要有3个用法（当然还有其他用法，如引导感叹句）：

1. 充当疑问代词，引导特殊疑问句。

What are they talking about over there? 他们在那儿谈论什么？

2. 充当连接代词，引导名词性从句（如宾语从句），仍然表示“疑问”概念。

I don’t know what they are talking about over there. 我不知道他们在那儿谈论什么。

3. 充当“复合连接代词”（也叫“复合关系代词”，还叫“缩合关系代词”）。叫什么名字不重要，关键是：它引导名词性从句时，不表示“疑问”的概念。

“复合连接代词”，是what的一个非常重要的用法，His eyes stare at what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table.中的what就是此种用法。下面再看两个句子：

(1) We should do what the teacher tells us to do. 我们应该做老师叫我们做的事情。　　

(2) He isn't what he was ten years ago.他现在不是十年前的那个他了。　　

句 (1) 中的what 实际上就等于everything that，the things that或the thing that，表示“物”的概念；句 (2) 中的what实际上就等于 the person that，表示“人”的概念。这两句话解释了what复合关系代词的用法：它既充当了先行词，又充当了关系代词；既可以表示“物”，也可以表示“人”。　　

从语法作用看，what引导的这个句子叫做名词性从句，因为它起的作用就相当于一个名词。那么，what从句在主句中可以做什么成分呢？请看例句：　　

What we need is their help. （做主语）我们所需要的就是他们的帮助。　　

He has got what he wants. （做宾语）他得到了他想要的东西。　　

That is what I heard on the bus.（做表语）那就是我在公共车上听到的故事。

what本身在它引导的从句中做什么成分呢？请看例句：　　

What appears difficult may be very easy. （做主语）看起来很难的事情也许很容易。　　

What we liked most was his jokes.（做宾语）我们最喜欢的（东西）就是他讲的笑话。　　

China  is not what she was more than 50 years ago.（做表语）中国已不是50多年前的中国了。

现在，再回到原来的句子：　　

在His eyes stare at what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table.中，what相当于the food that, what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table整个句子是stare at的宾语从句，而what又作了宾语从句的主语，of the brothers' dinner做what的定语。　　

关于what 复合连接代词的用法，下面再举几例，请试着翻译一下：

那么如何区别what是表疑问的“连接代词”，还是没有疑问的“复合连接代词”呢？这里有一个规律可以参考：一般说来，what 引导的句子，如果跟“疑问，询问，怀疑，质疑，疑惑，好奇，不知道，想知道，不清楚，不明白，不理解，不确定，悬而未决”等意义的动词连用，那么，what往往就是“连接代词”。反之，则是“复合连接代词”。试比较：

What we will do hasn't been decided. 我们将要做什么还没有决定。（what是表疑问的“连接代词”）

What we will do is of great importance. 我们将要做的事情是非常重要的。（what是没有疑问的“复合连接代词”）
