如何理解South America（南美国与南美洲）

South America 指“南美洲”，不是“美国南部”。

▲众所周知，地球的西半球主要是“美洲”（America）；美洲又分为“南美洲”（South America）和“北美洲”（North America）。South America 和North America 的首字母都要大写。此外，单独的America 除了指“美洲”，还可指“美国”，只有在具体语境才可分辨是哪个词义。

例如：

He’s touring South America at this moment in time.他此刻正在南美旅游观光。

They fled to South America around the turn of the century. 他们在世纪之交逃到了南美洲。

That ship is bound for South America.  那艘船是驶往南美的。

Antarctica is about 600 miles from the tip of South America.  南极洲到南美洲尖端的距离约为六百英里。

The Western Hemisphere refers to North and South America.  西半球是指南北美洲。

▲“美国南部”有好多说法：

1. the south of America

2. the American South

3. the southern United States

4. the southern U.S.

例如：

He spent the afternoon of his life in the south of America.  他在美国南部度过了晚年。

Canada is to the north of America, and Mexico is to the south of America. They’re the neighbors of America. 加拿大在美国的北部，墨西哥在美国的南部，它们都是美国的邻国。

The armadillo is found in the American South and in Central America. 犰狳生活在美国南部和中美洲地区。

New Orleans is the oldest major city in the southern United States. 新奥尔良是美国南部最古老的大城市。
