Algal saccharides, including polysaccharides and oligosaccharides, are bioactive compounds with unique structures and multi-functions extracted from algae. Owing to their excellent physiological activities on repairing the skin barrier and preventing ultraviolet radiation, they have become a research hotspot in the fields of cosmetics and skin care products. To further meet the practical application requirements in skin repair, an overview of the algal saccharides from bioactivities to applications is highly valuable and in great demand. In this review, the antioxidant capacity, moisturizing ability, photoprotective ability, anti-inflammatory, wound healing and enzyme inhibitory activity of algal saccharides are summarized, and the relationships among bioactivity, characteristic group and mechanism of algal saccharides in skin repair are discussed, providing a precious guidance for the directional preparation and precise application of algal saccharides in skin repair.
