词语杂谈：other than 的用法

other than 有两个基本意思：

A）“不同于” 相当于 different from; “并非”、“而不是”，表示否定意义。

B）“除……之外”, 表示排除意义, 相当于except ；

A. other than “不同于”(different from) , 表示这一意思时，other than 组成的短语

在句中可作表语； “不是” “并非”， 表示这一意思时，other than 组成的短语在句中可

作定语。

​The truth is quiteother than what you think. （表语）

事实真相和你想的完全不同。

Certainly, my associates and pursuits shall be other than they have been.

当然，现在我所来往的人，我所追求的事物，将和以前不同。

I borrowed some booksother than novels. （定语）

我借了几本书，都不是小说书。

Here is a IC card other than yours.

这里有一张IC 卡，不是你的。

Reactions other than the desired one often occur when the reactants are brought

together.

当这些反应物放在一起时，常发生不希望有的一些反应。

B. other than 用于表示“除……之外”，相当于 except， with the exception

of , 其用法分述如下：

1) other than 组成的短语置于名词之后作定语，修饰前面的名词。表示“除……之外，其他

都……”的意思。

The presence of elements other than iron will greatly affect the physical properties of

steel. （定语）

除铁以外的其它元素的存在将大大影响钢的物理性质。

Flights other than the ones listed below are not discounted at this time.

​在这段期间，除下列所列的外，其他航班都不打折。

Under some conditions chemical energy is liberated during a chemical reaction in

forms other than heat.

在某些条件下，在化学反应期间，化学能还能以除了热能以外的其它形式释放出来。

There are similar charges if you want to cash a cheque at a branch other than your

own.

如果你想在开户行以外的网点兑现支票，都要收取类似的费用。

2) other than 位于anything、nothing、something、anybody、anyone 等不定代词

的后面，此时 other than 组成的短语在句中作定语，修饰前面的不定代词。

The agreement cannot be signed by anyone other than yourself. （定语）

除你本人之外，别人都不能签署这项协议。

You could ask someone else other than me to go with you.

你可以找别人陪你去。（除了我以外的人）

Can you talk about something other than scandal affairs?

除了桃色新闻外，你就不能谈点别的吗？

None other than yourself can help you to solve the problem.

在这个问题上，除了自己没有人能帮得了你。

The lawyer seldom wears anything other than a suit whatever the season.

无论什么季节，律师除了穿套装外，很少穿其他衣服。

The old man wanted to see nobody other than his grandson.

除了他的孙子之外，这个老人谁也不想见。

3) other than 组成的短语在句中用作状语，可位于句首或句尾。 此时相于 except、except

for 用法。

There is no way out other than the fire escape. （状语）

除了防火梯外没有别的出路。

Other than a new jacket, I bought no special clothes for the wedding.

除了一件新夹克，我没有为婚礼买什么特别的衣服

She was numb to all issues other than the one which is concerned about her own

interests.

除了与自己利益有关的问题外, 她对其他什么问题都漠不关心。

She declined to comment further other than to say that charges had not been

brought.

除了说检察官还没有提起诉讼外，她拒绝进一步评论。

I volunteer because I love my city and I need to give back something to it other

than tax dollars.

我去做志愿者是因为我热爱我的城市，除了交税我还需要偿还它一些其他的东西。

4) other than 常用用于否定句，表示“除……之外，无（没有）……”的意思，组成的短

语在句中用作状语。

Other than one sister, she has no close relatives. （状语）

除了有一个姐姐，她没有其他亲戚。

She has never been to a big city other than Chicago.

除芝加哥外她没有去过别的大城市.

Other than Mr. Connelly, none of this group was injured in the accident.

除康纳利先先生外, 其它人在这次事故中都未受伤。

I hadn't done any car maintenance other than blowing up a tire.

除了给轮胎充气外，我没做过任何汽车保养。

It is relative insensitivity to any lights other than red and infrared.

除了对红光, 红外线光外，它对其它光相对来说都是不敏感的。

I'm not aware of anything after that, other than trying to get an ambulance.

之后我就什么都不知道了，除了试着叫救护车。

5) other than 后接指示代词 that，即 other than that, 表示“除此之外”的意思。that

指代前面句中所述内容。

We’re going away in June but other than that I’ll be here all summer.

六月份我们要离开这里，但除此之外，整个夏天我都会在这里。

His ribs were damaged, but other than that he's in good nick.

他的肋骨受了损伤，但除此之外一切都还好。

You should get a little stuffiness but other than that there should be no side

effects.

你会感到有点发闷，但除此之外不会再有副作用。

I made a few double faults at the end of the second set. Other than that, I feel I

played pretty well.
