China's carmakers are revving up

I revved up enthusiastically.

drivers rev up their engines.

He's revving up for next week's World Cup game.

1️⃣Motor shows may be on the way out elsewhere in the world, but a jamboree in Shanghai, which opened this week, has attracted 1,000 international exhibitors. Carmakers are showing off 100 new models. The event is testament to the growing influence of China on a vast global industry worth nearly $3trn in annual revenues.

jamboree【GRE】n.

固定表达be (a) testament to sth是…

His life is a testament that public service is a noble calling.

2️⃣Established firms are scrambling to adapt to new ways of doing business: electrification is supplanting internal combustion, software features have come to define and differentiate brands, and autonomous vehicles are inching closer to reality.

an established fact 既定事实

scramble to do sth表示匆忙做某事

He scrambled to his feet.

And that in a sense, the move to electrification is already inevitable?

Had television and the movies supplanted books?

differentiate sth from sth

differentiate between A and B

differentiate one person from another 认人

differentiate between one’s imagination and the real world

not give / budge an inch表示“寸步不让”

Neither side is prepared to give an inch in the negotiations.

3️⃣Adept at all three, Chinese carmakers are—along with Elon Musk’s Tesla—exerting an increasing influence on the industry. Tesla has inspired a host of new electric-vehicle entrants, and China’s car firms are poised to make significant inroads in Europe. A highly competitive global industry is set to get more cut-throat and innovative, making cars better all round.
