男性和女性的薪资对比、地位对比是很多考试爱出的经典话题。今天我们学习《经济学人》前不久刊登的一篇相关文章。全文只有三段，所以我们一口气把这三段全部讲解完。文章分别提到了两组女性，一组是低收入女性，一组是高收入女性。二者分别出现了哪些变化？又有哪些表达值得我们记忆？

主题词 gender pay gap

pay 在这儿是名词，而非动词，表示「薪资」。gap 表示「差距」，比如，age gap「年龄差距」。所以 pay gap 是「薪酬差异」。加上 gender，就变成了「性别薪酬差异」，或「男女薪酬差异」。

blip

这个词不是新朋友哦，blip 表示 a sudden but temporary change「暂时性问题」。比如， a temporary blip 指的是「暂时的麻烦」。

A spokesman described the rise in inflation as a temporary blip.

发言人称这次的通货膨胀加剧只是暂时的问题。

On average, women earn less than men. Much of this is because of the jobs they perform, by choice or social expectation; these are often worse-paid than typical male occupations. Some, as when women’s pay is lower for the same position, is the result of discrimination. Before the covid-19 pandemic, the gap between median male and female wages was at least edging down. The Economist’s glass-ceiling index of female workplace empowerment, published each year on March 8th, international women’s day, shows that this salutary trend reversed in 2021 in some of the mostly rich members of the OECD, including Britain and Canada.

occupation

表示「工作」，除了 job，还可以用 occupation，这个词是可数名词，有复数形式。比如「体力工作」我们可以写成 manual occupations 。另外，这个词和 job 的区别在于：填表时，「职业」一词通常都用 occupation，而非 job。

我想我在找的是一份具有冒险性的工作。

median

兼有名词和形容词两种词性，常表示「中位数」或者「中位数的」。很多时候，平均数无法反映样本的真实特征，比如，一人工资 1000，一人 2000，一人 10000。这一组人的平均工资为 4333.3，显然这个数字不能概括三人的工资状况。而中位数却是按顺序排列的一组数据中居于中间位置的数，就这组数据来说，2000 正好位于三数值中间，所以 2000 才是工资中位数。

The median age of the Americans may reach 35 by the year 2030.

到 2030 年美国人的中位数年龄可能达到 35 岁。

edge down

四级词汇 + 熟词生义

我们前不久刚在写作系列中讲过 edge ，今天又见面了。但它词性却发生了变化。edge 除了作名词外，还可作动词，表示「徐徐移动」。down 用来说明移动的方向向下。在坐标轴上，一个正值如果往下移动而不是往上移动，值会变小。所以文中 the gap was edging down 意思是说，男女收入差异「缩小」。

glass-ceiling index

术语复习

这则术语去年我们在讲时有讲过。 莫里森在 1987 年撰写了一篇讨论女性升职情况的文章 Breaking the Glass Ceiling：Can Women Reach the Top of America’s Largest Corporations ? 从而创造出了这个表达。glass-ceiling 直译为「玻璃天花板」。给你一把梯子，你最多也就是头顶天花板，无法更上一层，但玻璃的透明特性让大家以为升迁的障碍不存在，只有本人才能真切感受到这种无形的阻碍。所以 glass-ceiling 多用来指女性、少数族裔遇到的「升职障碍」。

empowerment

词根词缀

互联网圈有句注明的黑话——赋能，这个「赋能」的名词版就是 empowerment，动词版则是 empower。 em-, en- 作前缀时，常表示 cause to be, make into「使成为，使变成」。所以 empower 就是 「让人有了 power 」，常用来表示 to give sb more control over their own life or the situation they are in「给予某人力量，使有能力」。翻译这个词略有难度，因为我们常常需要根据语境灵活调整译文。拿原文 female workplace empowerment 来说，这个表达比较固定，常译为「职场女性赋权」。

Empowering the underprivileged lies in assuring them that education holds the real source of power.

帮助贫困人民就要让他们相信教育是真正的力量源泉。

salutary

四星形容词

学会这个形容词，我们就能在一些场合换掉 good，beneficial 等。salutary 意思是 having a good effect on sb / sth, though often seeming unpleasant。用来形容某件事「有益」，但可能也会让你感到不快。

最典型的就是「教训」这种东西了。有谁想吃一吨教训的？大家敬而远之，却又不得不承认教训存在益处，现在多吃点教训，以后就能少吃点。前提是咱们得长记性。 experience, warning 同理。所以，salutary 经常跟这类词一起玩儿。

The accident was a salutary reminder of the dangers of climbing.

这次事故提醒人们注意登山的种种危险，倒也不无益处。

金牌写作用语

好，我们在看来一个有关养老金的《经济学人》例句，巩固巩固。从中我们提炼出一个很好用的短语， have salutary effects on sth 「对……产生有益影响」。

If personal pensions do take off, they could have salutary effects on investment habits and financial markets.

如果个人养老金真的能成功推广开来，可能会对投资习惯和金融市场产生有益的影响。

One explanation is a hangover from the pandemic. When hotels, restaurants and shops shut their doors amid lockdowns, their workers’ wages suffered disproportionately. And those workers were disproportionately women. If so, the widening pay gap may have been a blip: demand from employers in these sectors has been hot since economies began to reopen. Americans working in leisure and hospitality have seen their earnings grow faster than those toiling in more male-dominated industries such as transport over the past year or so.

hangover

过量喝酒后第二天感到头痛，或者出现其他难受的感觉，这种情况称之为「宿醉」。这是 hangover 的本义，后来引申为「遗留观念或习俗」。既可以指正面和中性的，也可以指负面的。文中的 hangover 是负面意义，所以我们意译为「后遗症」。

disproportionately

五星副词

四级、六级、考研大纲都没规定，但这个词及其家族成员却遍布各大考试。去掉 dis- 和 -ly 就出现了真身 proportionate ，表示 of an appropriate size, amount or degree in comparison with sth「成比例的」，加上 dis- 这个否定前缀后，就变成了「不成比例的，不相称的」。

不过需要提醒大家，想要翻好这个词并不容易，因为很多时候我们不能直译，而是要揣摩上下文，才能想到合适的译文。来看一个例句， a disproportionate number of sth ，字面意思是「数量多到不成比例」，但真这么翻译可太啰嗦了，应精简为「很多，特别多」。

The area contains a disproportionate number of young middle-class families.

此地年轻的中产阶级家庭特别多。

副词 disproportionately 的翻译要简单一些，我们通常译为「很，非常」，可以用它来代替用了千万遍的 very 。拿原文来说， suffer disproportionately 意思是「薪酬受到了严重冲击」。来看 2018 年英语一考研阅读第一篇的句子。

About half of U.S. jobs are at high risk of being automated, according to a University of Oxford study, with the middle class disproportionately squeezed.

牛津大学的研究表明，全美工作岗位约有一半面临被自动化取代的高风险，中产阶级的处境尤其艰难 。

toil

toil 是一个很短却很苦的词，意思是 to work very hard and / or for a long time「长时间地苦干，辛苦劳作」。也可以和 away 连用，意思不变。下面这个句子是不是跟你共情了？

I've been toiling away at this essay all weekend.

我整个周末都在埋头写这篇论文。

The return to the pre-pandemic trend will be helped by women’s gains at the other end of the income spectrum. In 2022 the share of board members across the OECD who were women crept over 30% for the first time. MSCI now expects parity by 2038, four years earlier than previous estimates. Only 64 out of 3,000 or so big companies in the research firm’s global stock index had a female-majority board. But that was double the number in 2021 and includes giants like Citigroup and Shell. Analysis just published by Moody’s, a credit-rating agency, shows that such firms in North America have consistently higher credit ratings. Disentangling cause and effect is not easy. Empowering women ought to be.

at the other end of the income spectrum /ˈspektrəm/

spectrum 可以指各种「谱」，比如「光谱」「声谱」，波动范围很大，所以spectrum 引申为 「范围，层次」，比如， a broad spectrum of interests 意思是「广泛的兴趣范围」。回到原文， at the other end of the income spectrum 字面意思为「在收入谱的另一端」。这应该怎么理解呢？

上一段作者提到的酒店、餐饮等行业的女性大都是一线服务人员，假设我们画一条线，越往右数值越高，那么这批女性的收入位于收入较低的左端，而这一段提到的董事会女性已经跻身管理层，她们的收入位于数值高的右端，即「高收入女性」。

The two articles here represent opposite ends of the spectrum.

所以 credit rating 指的是「信用评级」。

disentangle /ˌdɪsənˈtæŋɡəl/

如果你刚刚「摆脱一段痛苦的感情」，或者希望自己「摆脱过去」，该怎么用英语表达呢？disentangle sb/sth (from sth) 有两条主要释义。第一，这个短语可表示 to separate different arguments, ideas, etc. that have become confused「理顺，分清」混杂的信息、想法等。

It's very difficult to disentangle fact from fiction in what she's saying.

很难分清她说的话哪些是真，哪些是假。

第二，这个短语还可表示 to free sb/sth from sth that has become wrapped or twisted around it or them 「使摆脱，使解脱」。

She had just disentangled herself from a painful relationship.

她刚从一段痛苦的感情中解脱出来。
