The Dragon Boat Festival, the 5th day of the 5th month in the Chinese lunar calendar, has had a history of more than 2,000 years. It is usually in June in the Solar calendar.

端午节（农历五月初五）是中国古老的传统节日，至今已有2000多年历史。通常在阳历的六月份。

Today, Dragon Boat Festival in the Chinese people is still a very popular grand festival. Country attaches great importance to the protection of intangible cultural heritage, May 20, 2006, the State Council approved the inclusion of the folk first batch of national intangible cultural heritage.

时至今日，端午节在中国人民中仍是一个十分 盛行的隆重节日。国家非常重视非物质文化遗 产的保护，2006年5月20日，该民俗经国务院 批准列入第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录。

端午的传说

Legends（传说） about Dragon Boat Festival

Qu Yuan was a famous poet（诗人） during the Warring States period（战国） of Zhou Dynasty. He lived in Ancient State of Chu, which is Hu Bei right now.

屈原是周朝战国时代的著名诗人，他住在楚国，也就是今天的湖北。

The King of Chu decided to ally with （联合）Ancient State of Qin. Qu was banished （放逐）for opposing （反对）this alliance（联合）and even accused（指控）of treason（叛国罪）.

楚王决定要和秦国联合。屈原因为反对这个连横被流放，甚至被指控为叛国罪。

During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of poetry, including the famous Li2 Sao1.

在流放期间，屈原写了很多诗，其中包括著名的离骚。

28 years later after Qu's exile, Qin invaded Chu. With despair, Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River.

28年以后，秦国入侵楚国。在绝望中，屈原投入汨罗河自杀。

Local people raced out in their boats to save him or at least find his body. This is said to be the orgin of Dragon Boat Race.

人民在龙舟上竞相划船，想救屈原，或者至少发现他的尸体。据说这就是赛龙舟的起源。

When Qu Yuan's body couldn't be found, people dropped balls of sticky rice into the river, so that fish could heave enough to eat instead of Qu Yuan's body. This is said to be the orgin of rice dumpling.

当人们无法发现屈原的尸体时，他们就向水中投放糯米糕，所以鱼儿就有足够的食物，就不会去吃屈原的尸体了。据说这就是粽子的起源。

Customs（习俗） about Dragon Boat Festival

端午的习俗

The customs vary a lot in different areas of the country, but most of the families would hang the picture of Zhong Kui (a ghost that can exorcise), calamus and moxa in their houses. People have Dragon Boat Races, eat Zong Zi (dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves) and carry a spice bag around with them.

端午节是我国二千多年的旧习俗，每到这一天，家家户户都悬钟馗像，挂艾叶菖蒲，赛龙舟，吃粽子，饮雄黄酒，游百病，佩香囊，备牲醴。
